The seven actors who played the von Trapp children took different paths after The Sound of Music: some continued acting, while others built careers outside Hollywood. Liesl actor Charmian Carr became an interior designer and author; Duane Chase, who played Kurt, studied geology and became a forester; Debbie Turner, who played Marta, became a floral designer. Carr and Heather Menzies, who played Louisa, have died. The surviving child performers have described lasting friendships and a warm connection to the film.
Where the seven von Trapp children actors went
The child performers were Charmian Carr as Liesl, Nicholas Hammond as Friedrich, Angela Cartwright as Brigitta, Heather Menzies as Louisa, Duane Chase as Kurt, Debbie Turner as Marta, and Kym Karath as Gretl. Their careers did not follow one pattern. A 2025 Guardian reunion report describes some continuing to act and others pursuing different work; it does not portray the film as a launchpad to major movie stardom for all seven.

- Duane Chase (Kurt): He studied geology and became a forester.
- Debbie Turner (Marta): She became a floral designer.
- Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich): He continued acting and, according to the Guardian, toured the southern hemisphere with Julie Andrews in a two-person stage show.
The same Guardian report quoted Hammond describing the group as “almost boringly normal.” Angela Cartwright said of their reunions, “When we see each other again, it’s like we’ve never been apart.” These are reflections on the performers’ shared bond, not evidence that all of them followed the same career or life path.
What happened to Charmian Carr after playing Liesl?
Carr was 21 when she was cast as Liesl, a teenager in the film. She largely left Hollywood after The Sound of Music, focused on her family, and established a career in interior design. Her firm, Charmian Carr Design, had clients that included Michael Jackson, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Carr also wrote two books about her experience with the film: Forever Liesl (2000) and Letters to Liesl (2001). In a passage from Forever Liesl quoted by the Los Angeles Times, she reflected on the film’s appeal: “If the film has touched them in some way, it is because it represents the world as they want it to be.” Carr died in 2016, aged 73. The Television Academy’s account also notes her appearance in the 1966 television movie Evening Primrose.
Which Sound of Music cast members have died?
Among the seven performers who played the von Trapp children, Charmian Carr died in 2016 and Heather Menzies died in 2017. The Guardian reported in 2025 that the five surviving child actors were preparing for a 60th-anniversary reunion. That is a report about plans at that time, not confirmation of any current or future reunion.

What the film changed—and what it did not
The movie is a dramatization inspired by the von Trapp family, not a documentary record of their lives. The Associated Press report on the Sound of Music Salzburg museum says the exhibition distinguishes the family’s history from the Broadway musical and Hollywood film. Museum officials described the historical Georg von Trapp as “not a strict paternalist” like the Captain in the movie, but as “a considerate, albeit much-burdened, father.” Those characterizations belong to the museum officials, as reported by AP.
One production detail about Captain von Trapp’s singing
Christopher Plummer played Captain Georg von Trapp, but his singing voice in the film was dubbed by Bill Lee, according to a Library of Congress essay by Julia Antopol Hirsch, a former story editor for Robert Wise Productions and author of a book about the film’s making. Hirsch’s essay quotes Plummer telling director Robert Wise: “If I had been singing with someone other than Julie Andrews, my voice might have been okay to use, but Julie’s voice is so perfect.”

Andrews played Maria, and Plummer played the Captain. The sources cited here do not establish a detailed, independently verified career chronology for either lead after the film, so broader claims about their later lives would require further documentation.

The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, according to AP’s 2026 museum report. The same report said the Sound of Music Salzburg museum opened at Hellbrunn Palace in September 2026, displaying nearly 450 objects, including props, costumes, posters, and recordings. It also reported that Elisabeth von Trapp, a granddaughter of Georg and Agathe, continues to guide visitors to filming locations.

AP said the museum’s initial exhibition was scheduled to close on November 1 and reopen the following March after a seasonal pause. Because those dates are seasonal and the report describes a schedule rather than confirming current operations, check the museum’s current information before planning a visit. For watching at home, the official Rodgers & Hammerstein page lists a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release.
