Tyra Banks and photographer Erik Asla reportedly separated in spring 2017, after about five years together. Asla later described the split as amicable and said they remained friends; the two share a son, York. Public reporting from that time does not establish the details of their relationship or co-parenting today.
When did Tyra Banks and Erik Asla separate?
Entertainment Tonight reported in October 2017 that Banks and Asla had been dating since 2013 and had separated. Asla confirmed to Norway’s VG, in comments relayed by Dagbladet, that they had gone their separate ways in spring 2017.
Asla’s reported message said: “We are both doing very well and are focusing on our roles as parents.”
How did they become parents?
Their son, York Banks Asla, was born in January 2016 via gestational surrogate. In a statement reported by ABC News, Banks said the journey had not been easy and described “a beautiful bright light at the end of the tunnel for me and his father, Erik.”

What did Erik Asla say about the breakup?
In a November 2017 interview with Dagbladet, Asla said the most challenging part of the relationship was “combining two ambitious people.” He explained that balancing both careers with family life had been difficult.
He characterized the separation as neither negative nor dramatic, saying they had concluded it might be for the best. He also said they still liked working together and being friends. Those comments offer Asla’s account, not a complete explanation from both of them.

Are Tyra Banks and Erik Asla still together?
The public reports establish that they separated in 2017; they do not establish their present private relationship or current co-parenting arrangements. A 2020 Guardian profile noted Banks’s preference for keeping her personal life private and did not provide a later relationship update. Claims about their current circumstances should therefore be treated cautiously.
