Townsend did continue acting: in 2013, he was appearing in ABC’s drama Betrayal. The available sources here do not establish his more recent work or whereabouts.
Why Stuart Townsend was replaced as Aragorn
Townsend’s departure came at the end of the trilogy’s preparation, shortly before principal photography. The exact private reason for the recasting is not established by the available accounts, so rumors about his conduct or the production’s decision should not be treated as fact.
In a 2001 report reproducing an interview with the Irish Times, Townsend said he had spent two months in pre-production in New Zealand and was removed the day before shooting began, without filming a scene. He described the experience as horrible, while also saying he was glad to be free to make Queen of the Damned. This is Townsend’s account as relayed by the report, rather than an independently verified production record. TheOneRing.net’s reproduced 2001 report.
Viggo Mortensen later said he felt awkward about replacing an actor who was already part of the team. He did not know how Townsend’s departure had happened and said Townsend was gone by the time he arrived. Mortensen also said he thought Townsend would have done a good job. What Townsend said after leaving the film
In a 2013 interview with the Irish Independent, Townsend said he had left New Zealand and initially moved on. The trilogy’s release and success later brought the experience back into view: “And then, a year or two after, the film comes out and it’s huge and it’s started to kind of haunt me again.” He also said he was glad to be out of the production and did not dwell on the past. He was still acting in 2013
The same 2013 interview reported that Townsend was appearing in ABC’s drama Betrayal as attorney Jack McAllister. That establishes acting work at that time, not his current career status.

Townsend also discussed being replaced on Thor. He rejected the interviewer’s suggestion that tardiness explained it, but declined to elaborate. That exchange does not establish the reason for the casting change.

The cited accounts provide no reliable, current update on Townsend’s work or whereabouts after the 2013 interview and retrospective coverage in 2019. They support a limited conclusion: leaving The Lord of the Rings did not end his acting career, but these sources do not establish what he is doing now. Claims that he retired, moved away, or changed careers require more current, reliable evidence.
