Spoilers for the live-action Resident Evil films: Claire Redfield survives the helicopter crash and returns in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, according to actor Ali Larter. Chris Redfield’s fate is not answered: Larter said the film leaves his whereabouts and survival unknown.
What happened to Claire after Afterlife?
Ali Larter, who portrays Claire Redfield, said that Claire survived the helicopter crash following Resident Evil: Afterlife and later lived with a group of survivors. In an interview published October 11, 2016, Larter recalled: “the last time you see Claire, she’s in the helicopter crash and she’s found this group of survivors that she’s been living with.”
Larter also confirmed Claire’s return in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Sony’s official synopsis for the 2017 film says the story picks up after Resident Evil: Retribution, with Alice returning to the Hive in Raccoon City as Umbrella prepares a final strike against the remaining survivors. The synopsis does not provide further detail about Claire’s story.
What happened to Chris Redfield?
The films do not establish Chris’s fate after Afterlife. Asked whether The Final Chapter explains what happened to him, Larter replied: “No, we don’t know where he is. So I guess that door is still open. Is he alive? Is he dead? Who knows.” Her statement leaves both his whereabouts and whether he survived unresolved; it does not confirm a later outcome.
#1 Best Overall
- Alice (Milla Jovovich) is back in the fourth installment of the Resident Evil saga. Now, without super human powers, she'll team up with fellow survivors Claire and Chris (Ali Larter and Wentworth Miller) to take on the armies of the Undead and take down the Umbrella Corporation whose virus has created them.
Why the answer is limited
Sony’s official Afterlife synopsis describes Alice searching for survivors and following a safe-haven lead to Los Angeles, where she and her comrades are about to enter a trap. It is brief studio copy, not a detailed account of the Redfields’ later fates. Sony’s The Final Chapter synopsis outlines Alice’s return to the Hive but says nothing about Chris.
The clearest direct account of the characters’ status comes from Larter’s October 11, 2016 interview with Den of Geek. It supports Claire’s survival and return, while leaving Chris’s fate open.

Keep the film and game stories separate
This answer concerns Paul W. S. Anderson’s live-action film continuity. The Resident Evil games have their own storyline; events from the games cannot fill gaps the films leave unresolved. CAPCOM’s franchise history provides context for the series, while the Redfields’ film fates must be read from the films and statements about them.
