He said he took a small part in Batman & Robin (1997) because he had been promised the villain role in the next Batman film, which he identified as Scarecrow. That sequel, reported under the working title Batman Unchained, was never made. Coolio blamed Joel Schumacher’s firing. Schumacher has described a different sequence of events: he decided on his own that he could not make another Batman film. The accounts that exist do not show a signed deal or a finalized casting decision for Scarecrow, and Schumacher has also said he approached Nicolas Cage about the part.
Coolio’s brief part and the promise he describes
Coolio appears briefly in Batman & Robin as the man overseeing a street race. In a later interview he said that appearance was meant to lead to something bigger. His words were:

“The only reason I did that part was because they promised me the villain part in the following Batman, which they didn’t do because Joel Schumacher — they fired him.”
He added that the next Batman villain was supposed to be Scarecrow. That is Coolio’s account of a promise. It is not a contract, a studio announcement, or a documented casting decision, and no reporting reviewed for this article shows one.

Nicolas Cage and the earlier Scarecrow discussion
Schumacher also spoke about Scarecrow casting. In a 2015 interview quoted by The Hollywood Reporter and in a 2017 interview with VICE, he recalled visiting the set of Face/Off to ask Nicolas Cage to play the role:
“I even met with Nick Cage on the set of Face/Off because I was going to have him play The Scarecrow.”

That shows Cage was considered for the part. It does not show that Cage was cast, and it does not show that Coolio was. Two competing names for one role are consistent with a sequel that was still in development rather than one with settled casting.
What the unmade sequel was reportedly going to be
The Hollywood Reporter identified the lost project as Batman Unchained and quoted screenwriter Mark Protosevich describing its story. The details below are plans described after the fact for a film that was never produced:

- Villains: Scarecrow and Harley Quinn, with Harley reimagined as the Joker’s daughter.
- Scarecrow’s method: his fear toxin and a hallucination sequence.
- Batman’s arc: the villains would drive Batman insane and get him committed to Arkham Asylum.
- Returning characters: villains from earlier films would appear in his hallucinations.
Protosevich framed the ambition this way: “Joel wanted to tie up all of the films. The Tim Burton films and his films, building up to this moment.”
Two accounts of why the sequel stopped
The two explanations on record come from the people closest to the project, and they describe different moments in the decision.
Rank #4
| Speaker | What they say happened | What the account does not settle |
|---|---|---|
| Coolio | Schumacher was fired, and the promised villain role went with the sequel. | No firing date, documentation, or studio statement is given in the reporting. |
| Joel Schumacher (VICE, 2017) | During a promotional trip he began questioning why he was continuing with the franchise. He then called his bosses from a vacation in Mexico and told them he could not make another Batman. | Schumacher’s later account describes a choice to leave after the film’s promotion and merchandising demands. The reporting does not reconcile that with Coolio’s firing claim. |
Both accounts agree the film did not proceed. They disagree on who ended the project and when. Attribute each explanation to the person who gave it.

A 1998 Los Angeles Times article reported that Schumacher had discussed another Batman film with Warner Bros. He said he had no immediate plan to direct a Batman film at that point. He did tell the paper he had talked with Warner about a possible smaller film with fewer villains and a closer relationship to the comics.

The paper later published a correction about the timing of Schumacher’s other projects, so the schedule in the original article should not be used as fact. The report is useful for showing that talks about a further Batman film were already underway, not for dating the Scarecrow plan.

Watching the scene yourself
Coolio’s appearance is in the 1997 film itself, so the film is the only way to see it. Check a current listing for the edition and format you want before buying, since availability varies by region and service.
