Tenacious D has not formally broken up. The duo stopped touring and all announced creative work in July 2024, after Kyle Gass made a joke about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump during a show in Sydney. Jack Black said the tour would not continue and that future creative plans were on hold. In January 2026, Gass said he and Black had worked things out, were working together again, and that the band would return. No date or specific plan has been announced.
What happened in Sydney in July 2024
The incident took place during a Tenacious D show in Sydney on Sunday, July 14, 2024. The band marked Gass’s birthday with a cake. When Black prompted him to make a wish, Gass said, “Don’t miss Trump next time.” He was referring to the attempted assassination of then-former US president Donald Trump at a campaign rally the day before. Footage of the remark circulated online, and the remaining tour dates were canceled.

Jack Black’s statement
Black responded with a statement reported by ABC News Australia on July 17, 2024: “I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”
Kyle Gass’s apology
Gass apologized in a statement that ABC News Australia also reported on July 17, 2024: “The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake. I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone. What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement.”

Did Tenacious D break up?
The available reporting does not describe a breakup. Coverage from the period describes a halted tour and a pause on creative projects, not a dissolution. Black’s statement is the closest thing to a formal decision, and it was about the tour and future plans being on hold, not about ending the partnership.
The difference matters for fans trying to decide what to expect:

What changed in January 2026
Pitchfork reported on January 21, 2026 that Gass told Rolling Stone he and Black had “hashed it out” and that their creative hiatus had ended. Gass described the process in personal terms: “It is like a marriage. You go through these ups and downs, and try to understand your partner.” He also said: “We will serve no D-wine, before it’s D-time — but we will be back. We will return.”
That is an indication of renewed contact and an intention to perform and create again. It is not a tour announcement. Gass did not give a date, venue, or project, and the reporting does not name any.
