Her father’s family later said they had given everything to her. The estate’s exact value and what Matilda actually received have never been publicly confirmed.
Who Matilda is
Matilda Rose Ledger is the daughter of Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams. The Associated Press report on Ledger’s will described her as the two-year-old daughter of Ledger and his former partner, which places her at about two years old when the will became public in March 2008.
Why the will seemed to leave her out
The will that generated headlines was written in 2003, before Matilda was born. Reporting on the document filed in New York said it left Ledger’s property to his parents and three sisters. It did not mention Williams or Matilda. The Associated Press story, republished by the Los Angeles Times on March 10, 2008, said the will gave no indication of the size of the estate.
That timing is the key to the apparent contradiction. A will drafted years before a child is born cannot name that child, and the document in the public record was never a plan written with Matilda in mind. Reading it as a statement about her inheritance mistakes what it was.

What the family said afterward
The family addressed the omission publicly within weeks. In March 2008, CBS News quoted Kim Ledger, Heath Ledger’s father, as saying: “Matilda is our absolute priority and Michelle is an integral part of our family.” He added: “They will be taken care of and that’s how Heath would want it to be.”
In a September 28, 2008 report, ABC News attributed a more specific statement to him: “There is no claim. Our family has gifted everything to Matilda.” That is the basis for the widely repeated claim that Matilda was to receive the estate. It is a family statement reported by a news organization, not a court filing or an accounting of transfers.

How much the estate was worth
Two dollar figures circulate, and they measure different things. Keep them separate when you quote either one.
| Figure | Source and date | What it measures | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|---|
| US$145,000 | Associated Press, republished by the Los Angeles Times, March 10, 2008 | Value of the New York City belongings listed in the court papers, including a car, furniture and bank accounts | The total value of the estate. The AP story said the document gave no hint of the estate’s size. |
| More than US$20 million | ABC News, September 28, 2008 | A contemporary estimate, described as “believed” to be the estate’s value | A verified or audited final valuation, or the amount Matilda received |
The US$145,000 figure is not the whole estate, and the US$20 million figure is an estimate reported at the time. Neither is a final accounting.

What remains unknown
- The final net value of the estate. No audited or final figure appears in the reporting reviewed.
- How and when any transfer happened. The family’s statement describes the intent to give the estate to Matilda, not the legal mechanics, timing or form of that transfer.
- Matilda’s current finances. Public reporting does not establish her present financial position or whether any trust is in place.
Michelle Williams has spoken about Ledger in later interviews. A May 25, 2025 VG article reported that she discussed him on the Armchair Expert podcast. Those comments concern Ledger’s memory, not Matilda’s inheritance, and they do not fill in the financial gaps above.
