Bob Bryar left My Chemical Romance in 2010, but the band did not publicly give a detailed reason for the separation. The available reporting does not establish that a feud caused it. After leaving, Bryar stepped away from the music business, worked in real estate and supported animal-rescue causes. My Chemical Romance confirmed his death in 2024 at age 44; its statement did not give a cause.
What did My Chemical Romance say when Bob Bryar left?
Frank Iero announced the separation on the band’s behalf in 2010. The statement described it as “a painful decision for all of us to make and was not taken lightly,” but did not explain what led to it. Pitchfork’s report reproduces the statement.
That wording records how the band characterized the decision; it does not identify a specific cause. The public record covered by contemporary reporting does not demonstrate that a personal feud was responsible, so claims about private disputes or blame should not be treated as established fact.
What was happening in the band around the departure?
Bryar joined My Chemical Romance in 2004, replacing original drummer Matt Pelissier. He played on The Black Parade (2006). He left in 2010, before the release of Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.

Contemporary coverage places the departure during the recording process for the band’s next album. An Alternative Press account said Bryar declined to give his side at the time. In a December 2010 interview, guitarist Ray Toro discussed the band’s dissatisfaction with its previous recording work and its decision to start over creatively; the sessions also involved drummer John Miceli. That context describes a period of change, but does not prove why Bryar left.
Bryar’s 2010 departure is separate from My Chemical Romance’s later breakup in 2013. The two events should not be conflated.

What did Bryar do after leaving the band?
Bryar became less publicly visible as a musician and eventually retired from music. Reports describe him working as a real estate agent and supporting dog rescue and animal sanctuaries. The Associated Press reported that he auctioned a drum kit to benefit an animal adoption center in Williamson County, Tennessee.
His recorded work with the band remains part of his musical legacy. Along with The Black Parade and Danger Days, Pitchfork reported that he played on songs later released as Conventional Weapons, which had been recorded before his departure.
