David Wallace, the Dunder Mifflin executive played by Andy Buckley, loses his corporate job when Sabre takes over the company, builds a toy vacuum, buys Dunder Mifflin back and returns as its CEO, then appears at the series finale. The show does not reveal what happens to him after that finale.

Where his story goes, step by step

  1. He is fired after Sabre acquires Dunder Mifflin. Wallace is introduced as the company’s chief financial officer. The character history describes his dismissal once Sabre takes control of the paper company.
  2. He develops Suck It. After losing his job, Wallace works on Suck It, a toy vacuum designed to clear children’s clutter. He tells Andy Bernard that he sold the invention to the U.S. military for $20 million. That figure is the character’s account inside the story, attributed to the episode “Fundraiser.” It is not a real-world sale or a verified statistic.
  3. He buys Dunder Mifflin and becomes CEO again. Wallace acquires the company and returns to the top job. The character history places this turn in the eighth-season finale, “Free Family Portrait Studio.”
  4. He appears at the documentary panel in the series finale. In the ninth-season finale, Wallace returns to Scranton for the documentary panel. Watching the footage, he says: “It’s kinda disgusting. You learn a lot, but I didn’t want to know any of it.” He then offers to contribute to Oscar Martinez’s campaign for the Pennsylvania State Senate.

What the show does not establish

The series ends with Wallace’s offer of support to Oscar’s campaign, and nothing after that scene describes his life. No later job, marriage, business venture or public role is shown or stated. Readers should not treat his CEO position as permanent: the finale shows him in that role, but it does not say how long he keeps it or what he does next.

The Television Academy’s show page lists The Office at nine seasons and 201 episodes, with a run from 2005 to 2013. That fixed run is why the character’s story stops where it does. Any account of Wallace’s life beyond the finale would be speculation rather than a reading of the show.

Keeping the story straight

Two points cause most confusion. First, the layoff and the return are separate events: he leaves after the Sabre takeover, and he comes back by buying the company. Second, Suck It and its $20 million sale exist only within the fiction. Plot details here come from a Wikipedia character history that cites the relevant NBC episodes. For exact dialogue, the episodes themselves are the reliable reference.

The series is a sitcom, not a documentary, but its finale is built around a documentary panel, which is why Wallace’s reaction to the footage is often quoted. For his arc, the important point is simple: his story is resolved as far as the show goes, and it does not continue beyond the finale.
