Manson’s name surfaced during Depp’s 2022 defamation trial against Amber Heard because Depp’s lawyers asked the court to exclude references to him. The court granted the motion. That ruling addressed what evidence could be presented in that case; it did not establish that Manson influenced Depp or took part in abuse.
What is documented about Depp and Manson’s relationship?
Depp’s 2022 court filing referred to Manson as his friend, and a 2020 English High Court judgment listed Manson among people close to Depp. Those records document an association, but they do not explain when the two met or how their private friendship developed. Depp’s motion and the attached order and the 2020 judgment are the relevant court documents.
Why was Manson mentioned in the Depp–Heard trial?
In the Virginia case, Depp’s lawyers asked the court to exclude references and evidence about Manson. They argued that bringing up the friendship could encourage a speculative, prejudicial inference by association. That was the position advanced in Depp’s filing, not an independent factual finding by the judge.
The attached order granted the motion. In practical terms, the ruling concerned the evidence admissible in Depp v. Heard. It was not a ruling about Manson’s conduct, nor did it decide the truth of the parties’ allegations against each other.

What does the court record not show?
The cited documents do not establish that Manson influenced Depp or participated in any abuse alleged in Depp v. Heard. An association between two people, and a decision about whether references to that association could be used at trial, are not proof of either claim.
How are Manson’s later legal proceedings separate?
Manson’s own legal matters involved different people and proceedings. In November 2024, the Associated Press reported that Manson agreed to drop his lawsuit against Evan Rachel Wood and pay her attorneys’ fees. In January 2025, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that it would not file charges against Brian Warner, known professionally as Marilyn Manson. The office said domestic-violence allegations fell outside the statute of limitations and it could not prove sexual-assault charges beyond a reasonable doubt. Its announcement followed a four-year investigation. A decision not to file charges is not a trial verdict determining whether disputed allegations were true.

These events do not change what the Virginia court decided about references to Manson in Depp’s trial. The cases had different parties, issues, and legal outcomes. The Associated Press report on the Wood lawsuit and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s announcement describe those separate matters.
