Short answer: the public record does not show a feud between Bruce Willis and Ashton Kutcher. The two men were connected through Demi Moore. Willis was her former husband and the father of her three daughters, and Kutcher later married Moore and became a stepfather to the girls. The publicly reported conflict of the 2010s concerned Moore and Kutcher’s own marriage, not Willis.

How the three are connected

The link between Willis and Kutcher is entirely a family one. Willis and Moore were married until their divorce, which a 2009 W Magazine profile places in 2000. Moore and Kutcher married in 2005. Moore’s daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah were the children of Willis, and when Kutcher married Moore he became their stepfather, according to CBS News and The Guardian reporting from 2006 and 2007.

That arrangement is the source of most of the confusion. A stepparent who joins a household where the biological father is a famous, active presence in the children’s lives is an unusual position, and readers who saw the two men described in the same sentence often assumed a rivalry. The contemporaneous statements from the period do not support that reading.

What Kutcher said about Willis in 2006

In an interview with CBS News published on August 16, 2006, Kutcher was asked about his place alongside Willis. He answered: “We are teammates.” He added: “We have our own friendship. I’m not saying it’s not hard, man.”

Those lines are useful for two reasons. They show that Kutcher framed the arrangement as cooperative rather than competitive, and they also show he did not claim it was effortless. They are his statements at the time, not an independent account of the private relationship between the two men, and they should be read as a snapshot from 2006 rather than a description of their relationship in later years.

What Moore said about the children in 2007

Moore’s most direct account came in a 2007 interview with The Guardian. She said: “Kutcher never tried to be a father or replace Willis.” She described the children’s nickname for Kutcher, “Mod,” short for “My Other Dad,” and said the family had decided that the girls’ needs came first. In her words: “In our case we placed our children as a priority.”

Moore also described forgiveness within the blended family as difficult but worth the effort. Her account is a first-person description from one parent, and it reflects her view of the household rather than a neutral assessment of every interaction.

The 2009 picture of shared family life

A 2009 W Magazine profile reported that Emma Heming, who was married to Willis, said she got along with Moore and Kutcher from early on, and that the extended family vacationed together. Like the other statements here, this describes what those involved said at the time. It does not establish how the relationships looked in any later period.

Moore’s 2019 account of her marriage to Kutcher

The most serious claim about Kutcher in the public record appears in Moore’s 2019 memoir, Inside Out. In an ABC News interview about the book, Moore said she learned that Kutcher had cheated, and that he admitted it when she asked him. ABC noted that Kutcher and his representatives did not comment on the book.

This is Moore’s allegation about her own marriage. It is not a finding that has been independently verified, and nothing in the reporting ties it to Willis. It should not be read as evidence that Willis and Kutcher were in conflict or that the infidelity caused a dispute between the two men. Readers who want Moore’s fuller first-person account can find it in the memoir itself.

What the record does and does not establish

  • Established: Willis and Kutcher were linked through Moore and shared a blended family. Kutcher publicly called Willis a teammate in 2006, and Moore said Kutcher did not try to replace Willis as a father.
  • Established: The 2009 profile reported cordial family contact, including shared vacations.
  • Attributed, not independently confirmed: Moore’s account of Kutcher’s infidelity, which concerned their marriage.
  • Not found: Any reliable public report of a feud, public argument, or dispute between Willis and Kutcher.

The statements above are dated and come from the speakers themselves. Anyone looking for a current picture of the men’s relationship would need newer, direct reporting, which the sources cited here do not provide.
