Fraser later recalled that they didn’t cross paths while filming The Mummy Returns, largely because Johnson’s Scorpion King was created with visual effects. Years later, both actors described their relationship in warmly appreciative terms.
Why didn’t they meet on set?
Fraser, who played Rick O’Connell, recounted the production story on The Drew Barrymore Show. A CNA Lifestyle report quoting the appearance says Fraser and Johnson did not cross paths during filming. Johnson’s Scorpion King was partly computer-generated, so Fraser used a tape marker to establish his eyeline in scenes involving the character.

Fraser joked, “Because in The Mummy Returns, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was just a piece of tape on a stick.” CNA Lifestyle reported Fraser’s recollection; it describes what happened on set, not evidence that the actors disliked one another. Fraser’s account concerns their lack of contact during filming and does not establish that they had never met at any time.
What did they say about each other later?
In a 2025 Variety Actors on Actors conversation, Johnson said Fraser had welcomed and supported his casting as he entered Hollywood. Johnson recalled hearing, “Brendan loves the idea. He welcomed you with open arms,” then thanked Fraser for taking a chance on him and for “really changing my life.”

Fraser said that when he heard Johnson was being considered for the role, he called it “inspired casting” and said, “We’d be lucky to get the guy.” He saw Johnson’s larger-than-life wrestling persona as a strong fit for a villain audiences would enjoy hating. Read the Variety conversation.

The Mummy Returns was released in 2001. Fraser starred as Rick O’Connell; the film marked Johnson’s first major screen role as the Scorpion King. Production notes describe the character and other creatures as visual-effects creations developed with computer-generated effects and animation by Industrial Light & Magic. The film’s production took place in Jordan, Morocco, and England. The film’s production notes quote writer-director Stephen Sommers praising Johnson as a natural whose charm and confidence would take him far as an actor.

The effects-heavy character explains Fraser’s tape-marker anecdote: a performer acting opposite a computer-generated character may have a marker to look toward rather than the finished character on set. In this case, the unusual filming setup limited the actors’ on-set interaction; their later comments point to mutual professional respect, not a personal falling-out.
