Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes said she would have married Tupac Shakur if he had proposed, but the interview documenting that remark does not say that a proposal happened or that the two were engaged. It also reports that she continued to think about marrying him after his death. Contemporary coverage separately confirms they collaborated on musical projects, but the public record cited here does not provide a complete relationship timeline.
What Lopes said about Shakur
Atlanta Journal-Constitution music writer Craig Seymour interviewed Lopes in 2001. In his account, first published in 2002 and republished in 2017, Seymour asked whether she would have married Shakur if he had proposed. Lopes answered, “Yeah.” Seymour also reported that after Shakur’s death she still thought about marriage to him, asking, “Does that mean I’m going to die in order to be with him?” Read Seymour’s account in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The wording matters: the marriage question was hypothetical. Lopes’s reported answer expresses what she said she would have done; it is not evidence that Shakur proposed or that they were engaged.
What is known about their connection
Seymour’s interview is the direct account of Lopes discussing a personal relationship with Shakur. Separately, a contemporary Los Angeles Times obituary says she collaborated with Shakur on other projects. That establishes a professional connection as well, but working together does not by itself prove details about their private life. Read the Los Angeles Times obituary.

What the sources do not establish
- They do not give a start date, end date, or duration for the personal relationship.
- They do not establish whether Lopes and Shakur used a formal label for it.
- They do not report that Shakur proposed or that the two became engaged.
The careful conclusion is that Lopes discussed a relationship with Shakur and expressed that she would have married him if he had asked. Claims giving a precise chronology or treating them as formally engaged go beyond the cited accounts.
