The interviews available do not establish an off-screen romance or a specific unusual incident between the two actors. The story that often prompts the question—Duchovny’s character sleeping with Zima’s character before learning she is 16—was fictional.
What Zima said about working with Duchovny
In an interview published by Glide on October 29, 2008, Zima discussed auditioning with Duchovny and the sex scene in the show’s first episode. She recalled taking playful risks during auditions, then described the acting connection between them as “the chemistry between me and David, and the back and forth energy – that’s something that you just have to trust is there, and you try to create as much foundation as possible for that to be there.”

Her remarks concern performance: audition choices, chemistry between scene partners, and the work of building a scene. They are not a statement that the actors were romantically involved away from the cameras.
Why the show’s Hank-and-Mia storyline causes confusion
On Californication, Duchovny played Hank Moody and Zima played Mia Lewis. The fictional story has Hank sleep with Mia before he realizes she is 16. In a 2009 TV Guide interview, Zima discussed Mia’s motivations and arc; a 2014 TV Guide retrospective quoted Duchovny describing the plot as a provocative direction for the series and Hank as a character who could do “really s—ty things.” These interviews discuss the characters and the show’s choices, not an event between the actors.

What the interviews do—and do not—establish
Duchovny described Californication in a 2007 TV Guide interview as a dark comedy about Hank, a fictional writer who had lost his family and was trying to get them back. His later comments about scenes and fellow actors likewise concern the work on screen. Taken together, the cited interviews establish that Zima spoke about professional chemistry with Duchovny; they do not establish an off-screen romance or a particular off-screen incident. They are entertainment interviews, not official production records or independent confirmation of the actors’ private lives.
