Why was Terry afraid to go back into the field?
Terry Crews plays Sergeant Terry Jeffords, whom Channel 4 describes as a family man and fitness enthusiast. The Fox broadcast guide says he loses his nerve after his wife has twin daughters: he worries that he will not be there to watch them grow up.
That makes Terry’s hesitation more than a general fear of danger. The guide connects it directly to becoming a father of twins and the possibility that police work could keep him from his children’s lives. His family concerns are part of the character’s stated motivation, not just an inference from his warm, protective manner.
How did the writers change Terry during the first season?
In a 2014 interview with the Los Angeles Times, showrunner Dan Goor said the writers initially imagined Terry as “a completely broken man.” They adjusted that conception as the season developed, deliberately bringing Terry back into the field over its first half. Goor pointed to the Christmas episode as a marker of that progression.

The production account helps explain why Terry’s early reluctance is not the whole of his character arc. The writers did not simply leave him defined by fear; they shaped a path back to field work during the season.
What is known about Terry Crews’s connection to the role?
Channel 4’s cast biography describes traits that overlap with the public image of Crews: family life and fitness. That supports a limited connection between actor and character, but it does not establish that every habit, detail, or catchphrase belonging to Terry Jeffords came from Crews’s real life.

In a CBS New York interview about taking the role, Crews described his own experience of visibility in the entertainment business: “I like to call myself a unicorn in this business because a lot of times people don’t know I exist until you see me.” That is Crews speaking about his career, not a fact about the fictional sergeant’s past.
