Spoilers for all six episodes of Season 4, including the finale.

River Cartwright survives Season 4’s apparent-death twist. The man David shoots is a lookalike assassin, and Jackson Lamb lies about the corpse’s identity to give River room to investigate. That investigation leads to Frank Harkness, the truth about River’s biological father, and a finale in which River rejects Frank but cannot keep him in custody.

Did River Cartwright die in the Season 4 premiere?

No. David shoots an intruder at his home, and the body is difficult to identify. Lamb tells the authorities it is River, creating the impression that the Slough House agent has been killed. The corpse is actually a lookalike assassin.

The false identification is deliberate: Lamb wants to misdirect the new head of the Dogs and give River time to act. In an interview about the premiere, Saskia Reeves described the story as being revealed “backwards” and said River had asked Catherine to protect David from MI5. The apparent death is therefore not just a surprise for viewers; it gives River cover while he follows the attack’s trail.

What does River discover in France?

River refuses to accept the apparent explanation for the attack on David. His investigation takes him to France and connects the attacker, along with other young men, to Frank Harkness. Frank has raised and trained sons as a private mercenary force, and the season links that operation to MI5’s “cold body” identities and to decisions David made in the past.

Season 4’s overarching story is based on Mick Herron’s novel Spook Street. That connection does not, by itself, establish that the television series reproduces every scene or event in the same order as the book.

Who is Frank Harkness to River?

Frank is River’s biological father. The revelation recasts River’s family history: David concealed the truth about River’s parentage and had a compromised history with Frank’s operation. River has long regarded David as a heroic, almost legendary figure, so learning both facts unsettles his image of his grandfather.

Showrunner Will Smith described the emotional turn as “losing his grandfather, finding his father, realizing he’s a maniac, and being left with Lamb as the only kind of father figure in his life.” Jack Lowden, discussing the confrontation with Frank, called it a young man suddenly facing a father he has never met, while knowing that this father has essentially tried to kill him. Those remarks capture why the reveal is more than a twist about biological parentage: River is confronted with a dangerous father and a grandfather whose past he did not understand.

Does River join Frank, and what happens to Frank?

No. In the finale, Frank tries to recruit River into his assassin family, and River refuses. Frank escapes police, and River pursues him through St Pancras. Their confrontation ends with Frank in MI5 custody, but not for long.

Frank knows about MI5’s connection to the cold identities and threatens to expose it. That risk gives him leverage, and a contingency plan helps him get out. The ending leaves the threat unresolved; Frank is not securely captured for good.

What happens to David, and how does River’s story end?

David’s memory and faculties have declined, and River takes him to a care facility. The scene closes their grandfather-grandson story with River facing both the loss of the man David was to him and the damage caused by what David kept secret. The series does not present David’s decline as an explanation that erases his past choices.

River’s family revelations unfold amid further losses at Slough House: Marcus and Sam die during the season. Their deaths deepen the grief surrounding the team, while River is left to reckon with a grandfather who needs care and a biological father he has rejected.
