The term circulated widely enough to get news and explainer coverage, but the reporting does not show that the practice is common or officially accepted by any religious body.
What the term means in TikTok videos
In the sense used in viral TikTok posts, “soaking” describes penetration without the movement usually associated with intercourse. Posts typically frame it as a loophole for people who believe premarital sex is forbidden, which is why the term is tied to Mormon culture in most of the coverage. Much of the material is joking or rumor-based rather than a firsthand account.
Jump humping: the related joke
“Jump humping” is an embellishment that appears alongside soaking. In that joke, a third person jumps on the bed to create the motion that the original idea avoids, so the couple can technically claim no movement took place. It is best read as a punchline layered on the same rumor, not as a separate documented behavior.
Where the term came from online
ABC triple j covered the phrase’s circulation on Mormon TikTok in October 2021 and interviewed former Mormon Mark Mariano, identified in that article as an ex-Mormon and SBS editor. Know Your Meme’s explainer, published in March 2024, describes the practice as a Mormon urban legend and points to early online references, including a 2009 forum post and a 2011 Urban Dictionary entry. Together, these show that the term and story spread through forums, dictionaries and short video, and were repeated over more than a decade.

Video reach is a different question. Distractify reported in a 2024 article that a TikTok about “jump humping” received close to 4 million views in less than a week in September 2021. That figure describes one video’s audience and says nothing about how many people do what the video jokes about.
What the coverage establishes and what it does not
- Established: the term and the rumor circulated online, and TikTok videos repeated and extended the joke.
- Established: the “loophole” framing is attributed to posts and reporting about them.
- Not established: how common the alleged practice is among Latter-day Saints, BYU students or any wider group. ABC triple j reported that prevalence is hard to measure, in part because sexual behavior is private in the Mormon community Mariano described.
- Not established: any official statement from a church or religious leader endorsing soaking as an accepted interpretation of doctrine. None turned up in the reporting reviewed.
Mariano was careful about scope. In the ABC triple j interview he said: “I obviously don’t want to speak on behalf of the whole religion, but I’m assuming that there is a very big vast difference between Australian Mormonism and American Mormonism in the sense that Mormonism began in America.” That is one ex-member’s personal caution, not a verified comparison between communities, but it is a useful reminder not to treat a meme as a description of a whole faith.

Reading the word in context
“Soak” also has ordinary meanings: to immerse something in liquid or to absorb it. A TikTok about soaking clothes, beans or a bath is not using the slang. To tell which sense applies, look at the video itself, the caption, and the comments. If the surrounding talk is about sex, religion or dating, the slang meaning is likely; if it is about cooking or laundry, it almost certainly is not.

The term’s meaning is clear enough to define in a sentence, but the claims around it are not. The supportable statement is that the phrase is a documented online rumor with a sexual joke attached, linked to a religious framing that the reporting itself treats with skepticism. The most recent explainer located for this topic dates from 2024, so the level of current use on TikTok may have changed since then.

When you encounter a video using the term, treat it as a joke or a story to be checked, not as evidence about any group. The reporting gives no basis for generalizing from one clip or one rumor to a community of people.
