They did not all get fired. Stassi Schroeder and Kristen Doute were fired from Vanderpump Rules in 2020; years later, Bravo paused the show after season 11 and recast season 12 with a new ensemble, keeping Lisa Vanderpump. Meanwhile, former cast members have moved into other reality shows, podcasts, books, entertainment and businesses.
What happened to the original cast?
The cast changes happened in two distinct waves. Stassi Schroeder and Kristen Doute were fired in 2020 after past racist actions toward a former co-star resurfaced. The later change was not a mass firing: after season 11 was put on pause, Bravo announced that season 12 would have an entirely new cast apart from Lisa Vanderpump. The Associated Press reported that Vanderpump described the transition this way: “In the restaurant business, one shift always gives way to another.” Associated Press
The distinction matters when asking what the “original” cast is doing. The series began in 2013 as a Real Housewives of Beverly Hills spin-off about people working around SUR, Vanderpump’s West Hollywood restaurant. Its first-season main cast was Vanderpump, Schroeder, Katie Maloney, Doute, Jax Taylor, Tom Sandoval and Scheana Shay. Tom Schwartz was initially recurring, Ariana Madix joined in season 2, and Lala Kent and James Kennedy arrived later. The familiar long-running ensemble is broader than the first-season originals. Lisa Vanderpump
Vanderpump stayed with the series as the only returning cast member for the season 12 recast and remained an executive-producer figure. Bravo has documented her restaurants and other ventures, but a previously reported venue should not be assumed to be open today without checking its current status. Associated Press Bravo
Stassi Schroeder
A 2026 Marie Claire interview describes Schroeder as a podcaster, host, author of three books and executive producer of a Hulu series. The profile reported 3.5 million Instagram followers at the time; social-media counts change. Those projects are separate from Vanderpump Rules, from which she was fired in 2020. Marie Claire
Kristen Doute
A December 2025 cast roundup reported that Doute had returned to reality television on The Valley, co-hosted the podcast Balancing Act with Luke Broderick, and welcomed their first child in June 2025. Us Weekly

Katie Maloney
As of the December 2025 roundup, Maloney co-owned the sandwich shop Something About Her with Madix and co-hosted the podcast Disrespectfully with Dayna Kathan. The Associated Press covered the shop’s opening and the show’s transition; check current operating details before making plans to visit. Us Weekly Associated Press
Ariana Madix
In its 2024-era coverage, the Associated Press reported that Madix had taken opportunities including Dancing with the Stars, Broadway’s Chicago and hosting Love Island USA. It also reported her Something About Her partnership with Maloney. These are dated career milestones, not a confirmed schedule for October 2026. Associated Press
Scheana Shay
The December 2025 roundup lists Shay’s Scheananigans podcast, memoir My Good Side and appearances on The Valley after season 11. Bravo’s business coverage says her synthetic lash line, Viva Verano, launched in 2022. Us Weekly Bravo

Kristina Kelly

Why the word “original” can be confusing
Sometimes “original cast” means the seven main cast members in season 1. In casual discussion, it may also mean the wider group audiences came to know over many seasons, including Schwartz, Madix, Kent and Kennedy. That broader usage can blur who was there at the start and who joined later. It can also make the 2020 firings sound like the same event as the season 12 recast, though they were years apart and affected the cast in different ways.
