Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs had a documented professional and public association, but that connection is not evidence of wrongdoing. Jay-Z was named alongside Combs in a civil lawsuit alleging an assault in 2000; the plaintiff dismissed that case in February 2025 and, according to a declaration reported by Reuters in September 2026, later recanted her allegation against Jay-Z. Beyoncé was not named in that allegation. Combs’s separate criminal conviction did not involve the Jay-Z civil claim.
What ties Jay-Z to Sean “Diddy” Combs?
Jay-Z and Combs had a public and professional relationship: they collaborated on one another’s albums and were photographed together at events, the Associated Press reported. Those documented connections explain why the two names are discussed together. They do not establish that Jay-Z participated in, or knew about, any alleged crimes. Associated Press reporting

What did the lawsuit allege, and what happened to it?
In December 2024, an anonymous woman added Jay-Z to a civil complaint against Combs. She alleged that the two men assaulted her after the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, when she was 13. This was an allegation in a civil complaint, not an established finding. Jay-Z denied it.
On February 14, 2025, the woman voluntarily dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning she could not bring the same claim again. The dismissal filing gave no reason for her decision. The dismissal by itself was not a trial verdict establishing either that the allegation was true or that it was false. Associated Press reporting

The later recantation
Reuters reported on September 25, 2026, that the woman filed a court declaration saying the claims against Jay-Z were untrue and that she had never met or spoken to him. In the declaration, she wrote: “Shawn ’Jay-Z’ Carter never raped me. I have never met or spoken to Mr. Carter. Mr. Carter never engaged in any inappropriate conduct toward me whatsoever.” This is her later statement, as reported by Reuters—not a finding by a judge after trial. Reuters reporting
Reuters also reported that Carter’s lawyers dropped the woman as a defendant in his defamation suit while continuing to pursue her former lawyers. That suit is separate from the original civil complaint.

How is the Jay-Z lawsuit different from Combs’s criminal case?
The cases involved different proceedings and outcomes. The lawsuit naming Jay-Z was a civil case based on the woman’s allegation. Combs’s federal criminal case was separate; Reuters reported that he was convicted in 2025 on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution and received a 50-month sentence. Reuters explicitly described the Jane Doe claim involving Jay-Z as unrelated to the case that produced Combs’s conviction. The conviction does not establish anything about Jay-Z’s involvement in the dismissed civil claim. Reuters reporting

Was Beyoncé implicated?
Beyoncé is Jay-Z’s spouse, but she was not named in the civil allegation described in the Associated Press reporting. The cited reporting does not establish that she participated in or knew about the alleged conduct. A specific viral claim in 2024 that Beyoncé and Jay-Z had been arrested or that their home had been raided in connection with the Combs case was rated false by PolitiFact. That fact-check addresses that particular claim, not every rumor circulating online. PolitiFact fact-check ABC News reporting

What the public record does—and does not—show
- Jay-Z and Combs had a documented professional and public association; association alone does not establish knowledge of or participation in crimes.
- Jay-Z was accused in a civil complaint, denied the allegation, and was later the subject of the plaintiff’s reported recantation. The original case ended without a trial verdict on the allegation.
- Combs’s criminal conviction was in a separate case and should not be attributed to Jay-Z or Beyoncé.
- The cited reporting does not implicate Beyoncé in the civil allegation.
