He called fatherhood the final push, but he was explicit that it was not the reason on its own. He also said he was retiring from playing, not from the franchise.
The reasons he gave
Scheduling and a business that could not be left
In a direct interview with TV Insider published September 21, 2023, Bergmann said it was becoming harder to step away from his company for the time the show required. He described that absence as a serious burden for a business owner, and said competing had become a pay cut compared with what he could earn as an entrepreneur. He said he had been building that business since 2012. The interview gives no dollar figure for lost income and no measured figure for how much time filming took, so neither should be inferred from his description.

He put the point in direct terms: “And I owe it to myself because I’m leaving because of scheduling issues, not because of anything else.”
He felt he had reached his ceiling
Bergmann said he had already achieved the competitive goals that mattered to him, and asked what remained to motivate another run. “There is no upward mobility on The Challenge. I’m at the top. I’ve hit the ceiling.” That is his personal assessment, not an objective ranking of his standing in the franchise, and it is not a claim that no future challenge could ever be possible.

Fatherhood: the factor he qualified
Bergmann’s most quoted line on the decision was: “Yeah, the father stuff is the straw that breaks the camel’s back.” He framed becoming a father as the last factor that made the situation untenable. He then rejected the simpler reading that he was stopping only because he had become a dad. The business and scheduling pressures were already accumulating before that, which is why the fatherhood remark should be read alongside his scheduling explanation rather than in place of it.
What “retiring” covers
The distinction Bergmann drew matters for how the headline should be read. “I want to make it very clear that I am retiring from playing, but I’m not retiring from the community.” He also said, “I’m retiring because it’s the best time to be a fan.” He expected to keep watching and commenting on the show, and left open the possibility of a cameo or a mercenary appearance, meaning a return as a guest competitor rather than a full cast member.

A gradual step back, not a clean break
A later TV Insider interview, published October 7, 2024 and tied to House of Villains season 2, shows the transition was staged. Bergmann described himself as in a gradual “weaning-off” period and said that show was shorter and easier than The Challenge. That is consistent with his stated position: he was leaving the longer, more demanding commitment while staying on television in other formats.

Who “retired” whom: the 2026 dispute
Bergmann’s exit from The Challenge: USA season 2 came in the Ripped Off elimination, where Chris Underwood was the opponent who beat him. Bergmann has said the loss did not cause the decision; the retirement announcement had already been made. In late September 2026, Underwood was reported describing himself as the person who retired Bergmann. Bergmann answered that his announcement predated their elimination and that Underwood was his last loss, not the reason for his departure.
