Is Pikachu a mouse or a squirrel?
In Pokémon’s fictional world, Pikachu’s official category is “Mouse Pokémon.” That label describes its place in the franchise; it does not mean Pikachu is a real mouse species. A secondary summary of the character’s design history attributes squirrel inspiration to original designer Atsuko Nishida. The two descriptions refer to different things: the official in-world category is mouse, while squirrel is a reported influence on the original design. Pikachu’s encyclopedia summary
Which animals influenced the live-action version?
The 2019 film Pokémon Detective Pikachu made a separate creative adaptation of the character. TIME reports that the team visited zoos and consulted animal experts while developing the film’s realistic appearance and movement. The references discussed included marsupials, marmosets, and sugar gliders. Those are film-specific influences, not a revised account of Pikachu’s original design or official classification.
