What Did Dinosaurs Sound Like? Why Jurassic Park’s Roars Are Unverified

Jurassic Park’s roars were invented for the screen. Fossils and sound models offer clues about dinosaur vocalization, but no definitive reconstruction.

Jurassic Park gave dinosaurs an unforgettable soundtrack, but its roars were cinematic inventions—not sounds recovered from fossils. Scientists can investigate parts of dinosaur sound production and build models from preserved anatomy, yet no definitive recording or universally accepted reconstruction tells us what a dinosaur sounded like. The movie may be far from reality, but the evidence does not reveal one exact alternative.

Did dinosaurs roar?

Possibly, depending on what “roar” means—but the fossil record cannot establish that dinosaurs made the familiar movie-style sound. A roar is a loose popular term, not a precise scientific category, and there is no preserved recording to compare with a cinematic effect. The most responsible answer is that some dinosaurs likely made sounds, but the exact calls remain unknown. The Smithsonian’s overview of whether dinosaurs roared likewise treats the question as unresolved rather than offering a definitive replacement sound.

What can fossils tell us about dinosaur voices?

Preserved vocal anatomy offers clues, not sound

Fossils preserve anatomy, not the voice itself. A fossilized larynx—the structure involved in breathing, protecting the airway, and vocalization—can help researchers ask how sound might have been produced. But the soft tissues that shape vocalizations are rarely preserved, leaving major gaps between a fossil structure and an animal’s actual call.

A 2023 study of the ankylosaur Pinacosaurus described a larynx fossil and called it a first step toward understanding vocal evolution in non-avian dinosaurs and birds. That is evidence for studying dinosaur vocal anatomy, not a reconstruction of what Pinacosaurus sounded like, nor proof that all dinosaurs shared one kind of voice. Read the 2023 Pinacosaurus larynx study.

Skull cavities can be modeled, but assumptions matter

Some dinosaur skulls contain large air-filled cavities that could have affected resonance. Researchers can use imaging and computational models to explore how air might have moved through those spaces. Such a model estimates what a structure could do under specified assumptions; it is not a recording of an extinct animal.

A 2026 Sandia National Laboratories account describes a project modeling Parasaurolophus from CT data of its skull. The team explored versions with and without vocal cords because the fossil cannot confirm whether those structures were present. The variants illustrate how an uncertain anatomical detail can change a modeled sound. See Sandia’s account of the Parasaurolophus modeling project.

Living relatives and hearing anatomy are indirect evidence

Comparisons with living birds and crocodilians can help frame hypotheses about how dinosaurs produced sound. Researchers have proposed possibilities such as cooing, hooting, or booming for some dinosaurs, including closed-mouth vocalizations. These are analogies and interpretations—not direct evidence that a particular species made those calls.

Hearing anatomy answers a different question from vocal anatomy. Evidence that an animal could hear a frequency does not by itself show that it produced that frequency, or that it used it to communicate, hunt, or socialize. A 2025 review cautions against stretching conclusions about dinosaur hearing beyond what fossils support. Its discussion is available in the review of dinosaur hearing inferences.

How far off is the Jurassic Park sound?

The film sounds are artistic effects designed to make onscreen animals vivid and dramatic. They were never recordings of real dinosaurs, and paleontology has not established a single “correct” sound that can replace them. So calling the movie roars “wrong” is fair only in the sense that they are imaginative and scientifically unverified—not that scientists now know exactly what the animals sounded like.

It would also overreach to conclude that every dinosaur was incapable of a loud call, or that new fossil evidence proves dinosaurs chirped like modern birds. The available evidence supports questions and possibilities, not a definitive sound library. For a broader discussion of how fossils inform ideas about ancient animal sounds, see Scientific American’s account of fossil evidence for animal sound.

What else might have filled the Jurassic soundscape?

The dinosaurs were not the only animals making sounds. A 2026 Arizona State University account of a PNAS study describes researchers using fossilized insect wings and comparisons with living sound-producing insects to reconstruct a diverse Jurassic insect soundscape, including ultrasound, from about 165 million years ago. This evidence helps sketch the acoustic setting; it does not tell us what dinosaurs called to one another. Read Arizona State University’s account of the Jurassic insect study.
