No one knows exactly what dinosaurs sounded like. The voices in Jurassic Park are cinematic effects assembled from animal recordings—not recovered dinosaur calls. Fossils and computer models offer clues about how some dinosaurs might have produced or modified sound, but they cannot verify the films’ voices or prove that no dinosaur ever made a similar sound.
How Jurassic Park created its dinosaur voices
The film’s dinosaur sounds were built as sound design. Sound designer Gary Rydstrom layered recordings of real animals to give the creatures expressive, recognizable voices, according to the official Jurassic World channel. Those recordings are not direct evidence of dinosaur calls, and the resulting effects are not validated reconstructions of what dinosaurs sounded like.
That distinction matters: a designed effect can sound convincing without being a scientific claim. The films’ voices are imaginative, not verified recordings or exact reconstructions.
What the Parasaurolophus sound model actually tested
In 1997, Sandia National Laboratories and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science used CT scans to create a digital model of a Parasaurolophus skull and its distinctive hollow crest. Sandia reports that the scans supplied about 350 cross sections, spaced 3 millimeters apart. Researchers reconstructed the crest’s internal air passages and modeled the natural frequencies at which the structure might resonate.

The simulation suggested a low-frequency rumble with a pitch that could change. It was an approximation of tones the modeled crest might have produced—not a recording, and not a reconstruction of the animal’s entire vocal repertoire. The team had to make assumptions about anatomy that had not fossilized, including soft tissues, and simulated versions both with and without vocal cords. Sandia’s 1997 project account describes those limits; its 2026 retrospective recounts the same uncertainties.
What the crest may—and may not—tell us
Parasaurolophus had an airway that ran from the nostrils through the hollow crest and back to the skull. The Natural History Museum says the crest’s purpose is not known for certain; communication, recognition, and temperature regulation are among the possibilities. Its overview of prehistoric animal communication describes the sound demonstration as computer-generated and emphasizes that the animal’s real sound remains unknown.

A resonant crest could have helped shape sound, but that possibility does not tell us exactly what the animal called, how often it vocalized, or whether the same behavior applied to other dinosaurs.
What fossil larynx evidence adds
A 2023 study of a fossil larynx from the ankylosaur Pinacosaurus grangeri offers another kind of clue. The authors describe a large, mobile larynx and suggest it may have modified sound in a bird-like way. They also state that a fossil vocal source has not been found in non-avian dinosaurs. The finding is evidence about anatomy, not proof that Pinacosaurus sounded like a bird—or like a dinosaur in a film. See the study in Communications Biology.

Three kinds of dinosaur-sound claims

Can scientists tell what sounds dinosaurs made?
Scientists can use fossil anatomy and acoustic models to test plausible ways particular structures may have produced or modified sound. But most dinosaurs’ exact calls are unknown: fossils do not preserve enough of the relevant soft anatomy to play back a voice or confirm a specific sound. Even the Parasaurolophus model concerns one species’ crest and relies on inferred details.
So the careful answer is not that science has proved dinosaurs never made a sound like the films. The evidence does not establish that any dinosaur made the films’ calls, either. Jurassic Park’s voices remain imaginative sound design; fossil-based work can suggest possibilities, not settle the sound of a vanished animal.
