Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga narrowly led The Garfield Movie at the 2024 Memorial Day box office. The May 24–27 holiday frame brought in $32 million for Furiosa and $31.1 million for Garfield, according to the weekend list published by Rotten Tomatoes and credited to Box Office Mojo. The Associated Press described the holiday as one of the weakest Memorial Day weekends in decades, excluding 2020, when theaters were closed.
Who won the 2024 Memorial Day box office?
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga took first place in the reported May 24–27, 2024 holiday-weekend results, edging out Sony’s The Garfield Movie. The ranking is close: Furiosa led by $2.2 million over the three-day weekend and by $900,000 across the four-day holiday frame.
| Film | Three-day gross | Four-day gross |
|---|---|---|
| Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga | $26.3 million | $32 million |
| The Garfield Movie | $24.1 million | $31.1 million |
These are the figures in Rotten Tomatoes’ May 24–27 weekend list, which credits Box Office Mojo. The three-day totals cover Friday through Sunday; the four-day totals include Memorial Day Monday. The two measures describe different time frames and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Were the figures estimates or final grosses?
The Associated Press report published Monday, May 27, described the holiday grosses as studio estimates and said final domestic figures were expected Tuesday. The later Rotten Tomatoes list reports the May 24–27 weekend amounts and credits Box Office Mojo. When citing the AP’s Monday story, its figures should be identified as estimates rather than final results.

The distinction matters when comparing early holiday coverage with a later chart: reports can be published at different stages of the reporting process, and a four-day estimate is not the same thing as a settled final domestic figure.
Was it the worst Memorial Day weekend in decades?
The AP characterized the 2024 holiday frame as one of the weakest Memorial Day weekends in decades, explicitly excluding 2020 because theaters were closed. It also reported that ticket sales were down 22% from 2023, citing Comscore estimates. That supports the qualified description “one of the weakest”; it does not establish an unqualified all-time ranking.
Rank #2
The comparison is the contemporary reporting’s framing. The cited material does not provide an inflation-adjusted historical comparison, so the phrase should not be read as a ranking of ticket revenue after accounting for changing ticket prices.

A weekend ranking measures a film’s receipts during a particular period. Box Office Mojo’s 2024 domestic annual chart instead gives cumulative domestic grosses for the year:
Rank #3
| Film | 2024 domestic cumulative gross |
|---|---|
| The Garfield Movie | $91,956,547 |
| Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga | $67,475,791 |
Those annual chart totals are not opening-weekend or Memorial Day weekend figures. They answer a different question from which film led the May 24–27 holiday frame.
