Nearly a year after publicly coming out as pansexual, Wayne Brady said his life had not changed dramatically on the outside. In a July 2024 interview, he described the shift as internal: coming out was something he did for himself, and it brought a sense of freedom to live and love on his own terms.
What Wayne Brady said about life after coming out
Brady spoke with PEOPLE at a July 22, 2024 event for Wayne Brady: The Family Remix. The interview was published July 23, 2024, nearly a year after he publicly discussed his sexual orientation in August 2023. At the time, the article described him as 52.
Asked about life since coming out, Brady said “not a lot has changed.” He explained that coming out was “for me,” and that the change was not an outward transformation: “The change is internal and it’s a great change to feel.”
He called it “one of the sweetest things” that had happened in his life, while making clear it was not the biggest event in it. His point was less about becoming a different person than about being able to live more freely as himself.

How Brady described happiness and freedom
Brady framed happiness as something personal rather than a standard everyone must share. “It’s normal, which everyone should be allowed to just have your baseline be whatever your happy is,” he said. He added: “And my happy is I can just be free, and do what I want to, when I want to do it, and with whomever. That’s the cool part.”
Those remarks are Brady’s account of his own experience, not a claim that coming out feels the same for everyone. They capture the distinction at the center of the interview: outwardly, he said, little had changed; inwardly, he felt a meaningful sense of freedom.

Why he connected success to his family
The interview took place as Brady promoted Wayne Brady: The Family Remix, a reality series about his blended family. The story described the family as including Brady, his ex-wife Mandie Taketa, their daughter Maile Brady, and Taketa’s partner, Jason Fordham. Brady and Taketa separated in 2008 after nine years of marriage and remained close co-parents and friends, according to the article.
Brady said one measure of the show’s success was getting to make it with people he loves. He also saw value in putting a multicultural, multigenerational family on television and discussing subjects he felt he had not seen addressed. The series gave him a way to share a family dynamic that some viewers might recognize and others might learn from.

In that context, Brady said: “To my knowledge, I’m the only me that has come out as pansexual in such a public way in my space, and I think the last metric of success is that I got to do it with the people I love.” He presented that as his personal measure of success for the project, not as a broader claim about representation.
