The available listing confirms that broad frame, but not the interview’s full transcript. A separate 2018 profile in Big Issue North offers firsthand context from Kramer about the band’s rise and the difficult years that followed.
What the 2018 interview looks back on
The Rolling Stone Music Now conversation was recorded in 2018 and presented as a retrospective on Kramer’s life and career. Its listed subjects span his work as the MC5’s guitarist, imprisonment and addiction, and a musical comeback in the 1990s. The full transcript is not available in the accessible listing, so specific questions or answers from that conversation cannot be confirmed here.
That distinction matters: Kramer’s story is often compressed into a familiar arc of early fame, personal collapse and redemption. The accessible accounts describe something less tidy—a long struggle with the loss of his early identity and with rebuilding a place in music.
What life in the MC5 was like
The MC5 came out of Detroit in the late 1960s, when the city’s political and countercultural currents were part of the band’s world. A 2018 Big Issue North profile places the group in the orbit of John Sinclair and the White Panthers, and describes a confrontational public persona alongside high-volume, exploratory rock.

The band’s reputation rests in large part on the force of its performances. Kick Out the Jams (1969) is its best-known early album; the later studio records Back in the USA and High Time followed in 1970 and 1971. Together, these releases show a band whose legacy is not limited to a single live document: the group continued to develop its recorded sound even as its artistic ambitions and personal circumstances became difficult to sustain.
What happened to Kramer after the MC5
After the band broke apart, Kramer faced addiction, criminal charges and imprisonment, followed by years in which establishing a stable music career was difficult. The profile does not present those experiences as a short detour before an uncomplicated comeback. Kramer described the psychological cost of losing the role he had occupied as a young musician: “The transition from being the kid with the hot hands, the next big thing, to being just nothing takes a toll on a person’s psyche.”

He also spoke about addiction in terms that resist a simple explanation: “In a sense, drink and drugs weren’t the problem but the solution, but of course a solution with side-effects. The real problem was I couldn’t get along with the world. Everything upset me.” Those remarks come from the Big Issue North interview, not the 2018 Rolling Stone Music Now conversation.
The distinction between the end of a band and the end of a youthful identity also mattered to Kramer. In the same profile, he reflected: “We all have two deaths: the death of our bodies, which we all eventually experience, and the death of our youth.” His account makes the aftermath more than a matter of career momentum; it was also a reckoning with the person he had been and the future he had expected.

How Kramer returned to music
Kramer eventually resumed recording and performing, developing a solo career from the 1990s onward. Later coverage describes renewed attention from punk musicians as well as continuing interest in the MC5’s influence. That return did not erase the years of addiction and incarceration; it marked a later phase in a life that had been repeatedly redirected.
In 2024, coverage of the MC5’s later album Heavy Lifting revisited the band’s legacy. Its release is another reason the 2018 retrospective remains relevant: Kramer’s story connects the original group’s brief, intense period to the longer afterlife of its music and ideas.

Where to read Kramer’s account in his own words
For a fuller account than a retrospective interview can provide, Kramer’s memoir, The Hard Stuff, is the most direct next step. The 2018 Big Issue North profile is useful alongside it for context on the MC5 years, the collapse of Kramer’s early identity and the prolonged difficulty of returning to music.
