In a photo Elon Musk shared on Nov. 28, 2022, his bedside table appeared to hold opened cans of caffeine-free Coke, gun-related objects and an amulet—and its stained surface prompted a memorable admission about coasters. Futurism’s account is a mix of visible details and commentary, so it helps to keep what the article reports separate from what it infers.
What Futurism said was on the table
Victor Tangermann’s Futurism article, published Nov. 28, 2022, described the image Musk captioned “My bedside table pic.” Tangermann identified several objects cautiously rather than claiming to verify their exact models or origins.
- Four opened cans: described as caffeine-free Coke.
- A modern-looking gun: described as what appeared to be a video-game gun replica. Tangermann called it fake; the article supplies no independent authentication.
- A pistol in a display box: described as a flintlock, with a famous painting of George Washington crossing the Delaware featured on the box. The article does not establish the object’s maker or whether it functions.
- An apparent amulet: described as a Buddhist amulet used for meditation.
The descriptions are the article’s identifications of items in the photo, not verified product details. Read the original account at Futurism.
Why the coasters line stood out
Tangermann noted stains on the tabletop and reported Musk’s follow-up: “There’s no excuse for my lack of coasters.” The line gives the story its simplest punchline: the cans and striking objects draw the eye, but the stained surface makes the missing coasters hard to overlook. It is an observation about the photo, not an endorsement of any particular coaster.

What the article says about the photo’s meaning
Tangermann speculated that Musk posted the image to provoke discussion and linked it to debate over the Second Amendment. That is the article’s interpretation of his motive; the post itself does not establish why he shared the picture.
The article also places the image alongside Musk’s public statements about gun rights. It quotes him telling CNBC in May, “I strongly believe that the right to bear arms is an important safeguard against potential tyranny of government.” The passage does not specify the year or day of that interview, so the quote should not be assigned a more precise date on the basis of this account alone.

Tangermann further observed that the apparent modern gun was fake and suggested the historical pistol might not be practical if functional. Those are the writer’s assessments, not independently confirmed facts about the objects. The article situates the discussion amid public debate following mass shootings, without identifying particular incidents.

The image’s reported contents and Musk’s attributed captions are distinct from the article’s reading of the post as a political provocation. The safest account is that the photo showed items Tangermann identified with some uncertainty, Musk made a joke about having no coasters, and the motive behind sharing it remains unestablished by the article.
