Wes Anderson recalled that Gene Hackman was angry about the flat-fee pay arrangement for The Royal Tenenbaums and had not wanted to make the film. Anderson said he persuaded Hackman by persisting, and that Hackman ultimately accepted the salary after the rest of the cast did. The account is Anderson’s retrospective recollection, reported by The Independent from an interview with The Times; it is not a published contract record.
What Anderson said about Hackman’s pay
In a May 18, 2025 report, The Independent’s Katie Rosseinsky attributed Anderson’s remarks to an interview with The Times. Anderson said, “Gene was very annoyed about the money,” and described Hackman as “furious” because the cast received a flat fee. He added: “And everybody else said yes to the salary, so Gene just went with it – and that just became our way.”
Anderson also recalled that Hackman did not want to take the role. “I talked him into it – I just didn’t go away,” he said. These are Anderson’s recollections as rendered by The Independent; the full original Times interview text is not reproduced in that report.
Why Hackman took the role despite his reluctance
The Royal Tenenbaums, released in 2001, was Anderson’s third feature. Hackman played Royal, the eccentric patriarch of the family; Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller and Luke Wilson played his children. Anderson’s account is that he kept pressing Hackman to join the film, and Hackman eventually agreed to the same flat-fee arrangement accepted by the rest of the cast.

A separate Associated Press interview, conducted in 2025 while Anderson was promoting The Phoenician Scheme, adds context about Hackman’s experience on set but does not verify the pay story. Anderson called Hackman “one of the greatest movie actors ever” and recalled that he enjoyed performing during takes, but disliked the waiting between them: “He did enjoy the movie, I think, between action and cut.” Anderson also remembered Hackman as not especially taken with the script and as having reservations about the character.
What is—and is not—known about the salary
The reported remarks describe a flat-fee arrangement and Hackman’s displeasure with the money. They do not identify the amount, spell out contract terms, or compare the fee with Hackman’s usual compensation. The available accounts therefore support saying that Anderson remembered Hackman as unhappy about the pay; they do not establish how much Hackman received or the precise financial terms.

Anderson’s later perspective on Royal Tenenbaum
In a Vanity Fair video retrospective published June 6, 2025, Anderson discussed his attraction to older, flawed, ambitious men like Royal. That offers perspective on the kind of character he wanted to put on screen, but it is not evidence about Hackman’s salary or his reaction to the deal.
