It uses the Gondhal ritual performance as its storytelling structure: the story is carried through the performance’s songs and rituals and follows a woman, Suman, who is trapped in marriage and works to regain control over her future in rural Maharashtra. The official material establishes that personal power struggle clearly. The phrase “village politics” in the film’s framing is an interpretation, not a documented plot element, and the sections below explain where that line falls.

The story as the official synopsis gives it
The official synopsis places the film in rural Maharashtra. Suman is trapped in her marriage and manipulates her lover Sarjerao’s fixation on the ritual to regain control over her destiny. The film’s central power relationship is therefore between two people: a woman using another person’s obsession to change her own position. The festival description adds a marriage, a love triangle and a ritual performance as the main elements. Beyond that, the official material does not describe the plot.
How the Gondhal performance carries the story
At an IFFI press conference reported by the Press Information Bureau on 27 November 2025, Santosh Davakhar said the film is told through the songs and rituals of Gondhal, a performance he described as a community and devotional form. The film is not set against the tradition as a backdrop; its narrative is built from it.
The director’s account
- Davakhar said: “We tried to hold on to a tradition that is fading.”
- He said: “I wanted to capture the original Gondhal for the future generations.”
- He recalled attending performances with his grandparents and described changes he has seen in staging, catering, lighting and instrumentation. These are his personal observations, not a general history of the form.
The lead actor’s account
Kishor Kadam said he grew up taking part in Gondhal in his village and recalled all-night gatherings that combined prayer and celebration. “This isn’t just a dance, it’s a community coming alive,” he said. His remark gives the performance a social role beyond spectacle, which is useful when watching how the film stages its gatherings.

Village politics: what is and is not established
The title promises a film about village politics. The official material supports a narrower reading.
What the official material establishes
- A rural Maharashtra setting.
- A marriage that Suman is trapped in.
- A love triangle involving Sarjerao.
- A personal power struggle over Suman’s future, carried out through manipulation.
What it does not establish
- Any village council, elected official or local leadership.
- Patronage, caste relations, land disputes or any other specific political mechanism.
Calling the film a study of village politics is therefore a reading of its power struggle. To test that reading against the film itself, ask three questions while watching:

- Does the community hold formal decision-making roles, or does its authority appear only through informal pressure and expectation?
- Does the Gondhal performance function as a space where people negotiate status, or mainly as a setting for a private story?
- Is Suman’s manipulation of Sarjerao an individual act, or a response to pressures the wider community places on her?
