Actor Wendell Pierce said a white apartment owner rejected his application to rent a Harlem apartment, and he attributed the decision to racism. Contemporary reports repeated Pierce’s account of the incident, but did not independently establish the owner’s motive or document a legal finding about his application.
What Wendell Pierce said happened
In a post on X on June 4, 2024, Pierce said a white owner had denied his application to rent an apartment in Harlem. The Independent published excerpts the next day, and Blavity also reproduced excerpts from his post. Pierce said he had provided proof of employment, bank statements and information about real-estate holdings, and described the rejection as an example of racism and bigotry.
Pierce cited his work on the television series Elsbeth and Raising Kanan, filming Superman, a completed season of Jack Ryan and his earlier Broadway run in Death of a Salesman as context for why the decision frustrated him. Those details explain the professional and financial background he presented; the available reporting does not independently verify the documents he said he supplied.
What the reporting does—and does not—establish
The reports establish that Pierce publicly described a rejected rental application and alleged that race was the reason. They do not independently confirm the owner’s identity or motive, report an investigation into this application, or document a court or agency finding about it. The claim of racial discrimination should therefore be attributed to Pierce, rather than presented as a proven finding.

Why Pierce brought up a separate court decision
In a subsequent post, Pierce said he appreciated the response to his personal housing experience but had mentioned it as an example of bigotry. He then directed attention to a separate court decision involving a grant program for Black women entrepreneurs. That court matter was distinct from his rental application and does not establish what happened in his case.
Fair-housing complaints provide context, not proof about this case
The Virginia Mercury, reporting on housing discrimination more broadly, cited the National Fair Housing Alliance’s 2023 report, which counted more than 33,000 fair-housing complaints in 2022. That is a national figure reported secondhand by the newspaper—not a count for Harlem or evidence about Pierce’s application. The article also noted that complaints may capture only part of the problem because some incidents go undetected or unreported.

The same Virginia Mercury article described fair-housing testers used by a Virginia nonprofit to check whether people of different races receive the same information. That is an example of a broader way to examine housing practices; there is no indication such testing took place in Pierce’s situation.
