Adelaide: a collapse that changed the series
India began the four-Test series with a win in the first innings, but the match turned dramatically in the second. The team was dismissed for 36, its lowest Test total, and Australia won the opener by eight wickets. The ICC described the collapse as the defining early shock of the series. ICC retrospective.

Melbourne: Rahane leads the response
India answered the opener with an eight-wicket win in the second Test at Melbourne. Rahane scored a century in India’s first innings and led a side reshaped after Adelaide. The victory levelled the series at 1–1 and made the comeback a contest again. ICC match and series retrospective.
Sydney: survival keeps the series alive
The third Test ended in a draw after India weathered injury setbacks and Australia’s pressure. The result meant neither side took a series lead into the final match: the Border-Gavaskar Trophy would be decided at Brisbane. ICC retrospective.

Brisbane: the chase seals the comeback
India needed 328 in the fourth innings to win the final Test at the Gabba. They reached the target, won the match and took the series 2–1. The ICC’s closing account highlights contributions from younger players including Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill alongside experienced members of the side. ICC report on the Brisbane win.
The sequence was unusually stark: from 36 all out and an eight-wicket defeat in Adelaide to a successful fourth-innings chase in Brisbane. Melbourne supplied the rebound; Sydney prevented the series from slipping away; Brisbane completed it.
