Nike’s 90-second “Dream Crazier” commercial, narrated by Serena Williams, debuted during the 2019 Academy Awards. It challenges the labels used to dismiss women athletes’ ambition and turns “crazy” into a call to prove what that ambition can accomplish. Contemporary coverage documented enthusiastic reactions on Twitter, though those posts are examples—not evidence of universal approval.

What happens in the commercial?
Williams narrates over footage of women athletes competing and breaking expectations. The voice-over lists dismissive judgments—“dramatic,” “nuts,” “delusional,” “unhinged,” “hysterical” and “crazy”—then counters them with achievements that were once treated as implausible.
The examples include running a marathon, boxing, dunking, coaching an NBA team, competing in a hijab, and winning 23 Grand Slam titles, giving birth and returning to competition. The ad’s closing invitation is: “So if they want to call you crazy, fine. Show them what crazy can do.” CBS News and the Los Angeles Times described the spot’s themes and examples.

The commercial followed Nike’s earlier “Dream Crazy” campaign, which featured Colin Kaepernick. What did people say about it on Twitter?
CBS News reported enthusiastic posts from fans, including one who called the commercial the best thing about the Oscars and another who connected with its message about being called crazy for pursuing a dream. That establishes that positive reactions appeared on Twitter; it does not show how all viewers or Twitter users felt.
Scroll.in reported that the commercial passed one million views within hours of launch. That was an early milestone reported in 2019, not a current view count or a figure independently attributed here to Nike or YouTube analytics.

Why the message resonated
The ad’s central move is to treat “crazy” not as a fair description of women’s ambition, but as a label applied when their goals challenge expectations. Its examples move from barriers in individual sports to representation in coaching and competition, making the point through specific feats rather than a general claim that every obstacle has disappeared.
Its ending does not ask viewers to accept the insult. Instead, it turns the word into a challenge: let the achievement answer the people who used it to discourage you.
