The performance came days after the Los Angeles-area fires damaged the homes and studio of brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, giving the song a painful new context.
What Dawes performed on Kimmel
The band reworked “Time Spent in Los Angeles” as a spare ballad, rather than presenting the song in its familiar full-band form. The reported account describes scenes from the fires playing on a screen behind the musicians. Dawes later wrote, “We decided to play a ballad version of ‘Time Spent in Los Angeles’” in its April 3, 2025 post.
The appearance was on January 14, 2025. It is distinct from Dawes’s 2020 Jimmy Kimmel Live! appearance: the surfaced official Kimmel page concerns that earlier performance, not the 2025 broadcast. The available sources establish the date and circumstances of the 2025 performance but do not confirm a current official video URL.
Why the performance was tied to the fires
The fires affected Dawes personally. Griffin Goldsmith lost his home, and Taylor Goldsmith lost his studio, both in Altadena. Dawes said the Kimmel invitation came within a week of the damage to the brothers’ properties. The performance was also connected to fundraising for the Recording Academy’s MusiCares.

As reported by Los Angeles Times pop music critic Mikael Wood, Grammy telecast executive producer Ben Winston said, “I read about what had happened to Dawes, and I listened to some of their albums and found their story so moving.” The account links Winston’s decision to invite the band with its losses and its support for the community.
The song existed long before the fires
“Time Spent in Los Angeles” was not written in response to the 2025 fires. Taylor Goldsmith wrote it in 2010 while in Nashville working on material for Middle Brother. In his account of the song’s origins, he recalled, “I wrote Time Spent in Los Angeles (TSLA for the rest of this post) when I was in Nashville writing for the Middle Brother album.” He wrote it alone, then persuaded his collaborators to let him keep it for Dawes.

The song became the opening track on Dawes’s second album, Nothing Is Wrong. Goldsmith has described it as an important step in the band’s growth and an early radio success. The Kimmel performance therefore brought an older song about Los Angeles into a moment when the city and the band were dealing with fresh devastation.

After the broadcast, Dawes decided to record the ballad arrangement in a studio. On April 3, 2025, the band said it had made the recording in one take at Mike Viola’s Echo Park home studio, joined by fellow Angelenos Andrew Bird and Alan Hampton. Dawes said it hoped the recording would raise additional money for MusiCares.

| Version | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|
| Kimmel performance, January 14, 2025 | A stripped-down ballad arrangement performed on television against fire imagery, in the immediate aftermath of the damage to the Goldsmith brothers’ Altadena properties. |
| Later studio recording, announced April 3, 2025 | A one-take recording of the ballad arrangement made at Mike Viola’s Echo Park home studio with Andrew Bird and Alan Hampton, with the stated hope of raising more money for MusiCares. |
| Original song | Written by Taylor Goldsmith in 2010 and released as the opening track of Nothing Is Wrong; it predates the fires and is not the same recording as either 2025 version. |
The studio take is a separate recording, not simply another name for the Kimmel broadcast. The performance’s significance lies in the contrast: a song written years earlier became newly immediate when Dawes played it in the wake of losses to its own members and their community.
