On November 6, 2024, CNN commentator Van Jones became audibly choked up while discussing Donald Trump’s election victory. He focused on people he believed would be hurt or frightened by the result, including Black women, parents of transgender children and undocumented workers. The remarks were Jones’s reaction and political assessment—not proof of what a new administration would ultimately do.
What Van Jones said on CNN
A November 6, 2024 report published excerpts from CNN’s election coverage, attributing them to Jones. He said he was thinking about people “who are not part of anybody’s elite, who are hurting tonight.” His concern centered on the consequences he believed the election could have for people with less political power.
Jones spoke about Black women who had hoped to see someone like themselves in the presidency, saying, “They were hoping that maybe this time, this time, one of their own could be seen as worthy.” He also addressed parents of transgender children: “If you are a parent of a trans kid, your child’s face was used as a springboard to power for somebody.”
He described undocumented workers as frightened about what might follow, saying, “There are going to be people tomorrow were going to be handing clothes at the dry cleaners to people who don’t have papers. There are going to be people cleaning your teeth tomorrow who don’t have papers. They are terrified tonight.”

Jones concluded with a warning about who he thought would bear the consequences of decisions by the incoming administration: “It’s not the elites who are going to pay the price. It’s the people who woke up this morning with a dream and are going to bed with a nightmare. Those people will pay the price for whatever Donald Trump decides to do.” That was his political judgment about possible future harms, not an independently established outcome.

Why the election-night context matters
The remarks came after Trump won the 2024 presidential election. The Associated Press’s broader account of election-night coverage describes results moving toward Trump as the night progressed; by midnight, CNN’s count showed him leading Kamala Harris in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. That provides context for the changing election picture, but it does not independently verify the timing or wording of Jones’s segment.
The AP account concerns the election-night coverage more broadly, rather than serving as a transcript of Jones’s remarks.

This was not Van Jones’s 2020 moment
Jones also became tearful on CNN in November 2020, but that was a different election and a different reaction. TIME reported that he spoke after the Associated Press called Pennsylvania for Joe Biden, whose victory over Trump was then clear. His remarks in 2020 touched on parenting, character, truth and immigrants.
The 2024 moment followed Trump’s victory and centered on Jones’s fears for people he viewed as vulnerable to the incoming administration’s choices. Keeping the two episodes separate matters: they occurred four years apart, after opposite election outcomes, and the 2020 remarks should not be blended into the 2024 account.
