Fact-checkers found no Greek government announcement of an entry ban or of his Greek honorary citizenship being revoked. The post making the claim cited “Jostaki Barronopolous,” a supposed Greek foreign minister who does not exist.
What the viral post claimed
In February 2026, a social-media post alleged that Hanks was refused entry at the Port of Athens because his name appeared in Epstein-related files. It also attributed a statement about revoking his Greek citizenship to “Jostaki Barronopolous.” DW and Facta found the story fabricated: the named official is fictitious, and they found no official Greek announcement confirming a ban or revoked honorary citizenship. Facta also reported that the claim did not appear in credible, reliable media. DW’s fact check and Facta’s fact check examined the rumor.
DW identified George Gerapetritis as Greece’s foreign minister; the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs homepage also listed him as minister in an October 7, 2026 entry. That makes the invented name a clear warning sign, not evidence of any government action. The ministry’s homepage is the official source for its current information.
What is known about Hanks and the files
DW reports that Hanks’s name appears in passing references in the released files, with no indication of wrongdoing. Facta says the references it reviewed concern his work as an actor and director, rather than Epstein’s alleged crimes. Those descriptions do not support claims that Hanks was a client, participant, or visitor.

The distinction matters because a name appearing in a record is not, by itself, proof of criminal activity. In DW’s explanation of how to assess the releases, data journalist Gianna Grün said: “A name appearing in a document does not, by itself, establish involvement in criminal activity.” She also stressed that context matters more than the number of times someone is mentioned. DW’s reporting explains why mentions need to be read in context.
Why a name in a large document release is not proof
On January 30, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice said it had published more than 3 million additional pages, including more than 2,000 videos and 180,000 images. With prior releases, the total production was nearly 3.5 million pages. The department said the material came from court cases and investigations; it also listed duplicates, privileged material, statutory exceptions, and unrelated material among categories not produced. The DOJ announcement describes the release.

Those totals describe the scale of the publication, not the significance or reliability of any individual mention. The Associated Press’s coverage of the January 2024 court-record unsealing noted that named people included accusers, staff, witnesses, investigators, and people mentioned in passing—not only people accused of wrongdoing. That is general context for interpreting records; it does not establish what a particular Hanks reference means. The Associated Press reported on the unsealing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was Hanks’s Greek honorary citizenship revoked?
No evidence of a revocation was identified by DW or Facta. Hanks did receive Greek honorary citizenship: Facta says it was conferred at the end of 2019, while DW describes him as receiving Greek citizenship in 2020. Because those sources differ on the timing, it is safest not to assign a single exact date without the original award record. The distinction is also important: the sources describe an honorary citizenship award, not an ordinary account of acquiring nationality.
