Rio Vidal, played by Aubrey Plaza in Agatha All Along, is revealed in episode 7, “Death’s Hand in Mine,” to be Death. Lilia recognizes her during a tarot reading, and Agatha confirms it. Rio and Agatha also share an earlier history: a past involvement that the series keeps emotionally unresolved. Marvel Comics has its own cosmic Death and a separate, extensive history for Agatha Harkness, so the two should be kept apart.
How the series reveals Rio as Death
The reveal is explicit, not a fan theory. The Los Angeles Times’ episode 7 recap (October 30, 2024) reports that the coven concludes Rio “has been Death all along.” Lilia says, “Rio. She’s Death,” and Agatha acknowledges it.
The clues were planted earlier. The same recap notes that the Ouija board in episode 5 spells D-E-A-T-H, one of several signals that pointed toward the answer before the tarot trial made it official.
Rio and Agatha’s history on screen
The series establishes that Rio and Agatha were romantically involved in the past, and that the involvement may have ended centuries ago. The characters remain drawn to one another, and that tension drives much of their present-day dynamic.

The Los Angeles Times also reports the constraints the characters describe. Rio says she is “not allowed” to kill Agatha, while Agatha cannot kill Rio or absorb her powers. These are plot rules as stated during the series’ original 2024 run. They are not timeless facts about the characters, and they should not be read as comics canon.
What showrunner Jac Schaeffer said about Agatha and death
In an interview with TheWrap published October 25, 2024, showrunner Jac Schaeffer described Agatha’s attitude toward mortality:

“I do think that Agatha is afraid of death, but more so I think she refuses it. She refutes it. It is not for her.”
Schaeffer added: “I think, in some ways, her relationship with Rio is a way to keep death at arm’s length. Because with them, it is about process and collaboration.” She also said Agatha is fascinated by death and has sometimes manipulated it to keep herself safe. These remarks are the showrunner’s interpretation of the adaptation. They do not establish a universal comics relationship between the two characters.

Agatha Harkness in Marvel Comics
Marvel’s own character explainer, “Who Is Agatha Harkness?” (published February 25, 2021), presents her as a powerful and morally complicated witch and an ancient mystic. Marvel’s character reading list for her points readers to a wider run of stories, and it places her in the orbit of the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, the Scarlet Witch, and the Vision.
Those sources are the right starting point for Agatha’s comics history. They do not identify Rio Vidal as a comics character.

Marvel Comics’ Death and the MCU Rio compared
The Los Angeles Times describes the comics version of Death as a cosmic entity embodying death and mortality. She first appeared in Captain Marvel No. 26 as a cloaked cohort of Thanos, and the article links Thanos’s pursuit of the Infinity Stones in the comics to his wish to woo her.
| Point | Marvel Comics Death | MCU Rio Vidal (Agatha All Along) |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Cosmic entity embodying death and mortality | Revealed as Death in episode 7 (Los Angeles Times, October 30, 2024) |
| First appearance | Captain Marvel No. 26, as a cloaked cohort of Thanos (per the Los Angeles Times) | Series character, introduced in the 2024 show |
| Link to Thanos | Established in the comics | Not established; the Los Angeles Times said a Thanos connection for the MCU version seemed unlikely in the story context then under discussion |
| Relationship with Agatha | Not stated in the sources reviewed for this article | A past romance that may have ended centuries ago, with ongoing attraction and tension |
| “Green Witch” label | Not stated in the sources reviewed for this article | Rio is also called a Green Witch; the Los Angeles Times reads this as a possible hint at life’s cycle, which it presents as interpretation rather than confirmed mechanics |
The practical rule is simple: when a comics source discusses Death, it is discussing the cosmic figure from Marvel’s print history. When a series source discusses Rio, it is discussing the adaptation’s character. The two share a title, not a biography.
