What happens to Margaret Roylin?
At the end of Season 1, Kate Wyler discovers that the apparent attack on the British warship HMS Courageous is connected to Trowbridge. The finale’s car bombing leaves several characters’ fates uncertain. Netflix’s Season 2 recap explains how the investigation develops: Roylin is the British figure involved in the attack, while Penn was the person who came up with the idea.

That distinction matters. Roylin is deeply implicated in the conspiracy and its cover-up, but she is not presented as its highest-level architect. In the Season 3 premiere, Trowbridge knows of her connection to the attack. The United States offers Roylin asylum; toward the end of the episode, she dies by suicide rather than betray her country further. Netflix’s Season 3 recap attributes this account to creator and showrunner Debora Cahn.
Why is Roylin important to the conspiracy?
Roylin connects the British side of the HMS Courageous plot to the American side. Her role pushes Kate’s investigation beyond the initial suspicion that Trowbridge alone was responsible, revealing a broader conspiracy that involves Penn as well. Roylin’s death then carries the cost of the cover-up into the next stage of the story.

She also complicates Kate’s understanding of the people behind the plot. Cahn says Kate comes to understand Roylin and “begrudgingly respect her.” Roylin believes she made the right choices for her country; the show presents that conviction alongside her culpability, not as an excuse for it.
How Kate’s view of Roylin changes
Roylin is not simply a source of information or an obstacle for Kate. As Kate learns more about her, she begins to see the reasoning behind Roylin’s choices, even while confronting the consequences. Cahn’s description of Kate’s reluctant respect captures that tension: the two women may understand one another without agreeing about what loyalty to a country permits.

Cahn also describes Roylin’s final choice this way: “Sometimes in order to be the person who rises to meet that moment, the game ends.” The line frames Roylin’s death as the end point of a political decision she believes she must make, rather than a resolution that erases her part in the conspiracy.
