During the song, he tapped a wrench against his microphone or its stand for percussion. JamBase reported it was the first public performance of the song since August 26, 2018.
What happened at Darien Lake?
Dylan performed at Darien Lake Performing Arts Center as part of the Outlaw Music Festival tour. The 15-song set placed “Desolation Row” after “Six Days on the Road” and before “Soon After Midnight,” according to JamBase’s setlist report.
The striking detail was the percussion: Dylan tapped or banged a wrench against his microphone or microphone stand while performing. Stereogum’s report also describes the wrench. Neither account establishes why he used it, so the gesture is best understood as an observed part of this performance—not as evidence of a particular joke, musical plan, or problem onstage.
Why “Desolation Row” was a notable return
“Desolation Row” closes Dylan’s 1965 album Highway 61 Revisited. JamBase’s 2024 account, drawing on the performance history listed on Dylan’s official website, says the song had been played live more than 580 times by that year. Its Darien Lake appearance was notable not because the song was new to his live repertoire, but because it returned after a long absence.

JamBase identifies August 26, 2018, in Auckland as the previous performance and September 17, 2024, at Darien Lake as the first public performance since then. That makes the gap just over six years.
Where to find the performance
The reports document the date, setlist placement, and wrench detail, but do not establish an authenticated full video or audio recording of the Darien Lake rendition. Treat any circulating clip as unverified unless its provenance is clear. For the song’s original album context, look to Highway 61 Revisited; the 2024 live performance is not part of that 1965 album.
