He transposed it into his performance himself.
How Kripke’s speech came about
In his Kripke FAQ, Bowie recalled that Chuck Lorre thought the character needed vulnerability and suggested a speech impediment. Bill Prady, who was also present, proposed a liquid “l” sound “like Brokaw.” Bowie said he developed that suggestion into what he called an “Elmer Fudd pastiche,” and Lorre laughed.
Bowie gave the direct answer about the script: “No, the impediment is not written into the script, I transpose it on my own.” The distinction is between the dialogue on the page and the way he delivered it; Bowie said he added the speech pattern while performing the lines.
Was that Bowie’s natural way of speaking?
No. Bowie also said, “No, I don’t talk that way in real life.” The performance was a choice for Kripke, not a description of how Bowie normally speaks. The sources identify it as a speech impediment but do not establish a specific clinical diagnosis.

What Bowie said later
In a 2017 interview with The A.V. Club, Bowie similarly recalled that the auditioners wanted a subtle impediment to give Kripke vulnerability, and that he developed the performance associated with the character.
The official podcast listing for its October 6, 2025 episode says Bowie discussed his first appearance as Kripke and how the impediment came about. The listing confirms the topic was revisited, but it is not a transcript and does not establish further details or quotations from the episode.
