Reporting documents professional resistance and ostracism after Mel Gibson’s 2006 remarks, including calls by some industry figures to refuse to work with him. It does not establish a coordinated, formal Hollywood-wide ban. Gibson continued to work, returned to starring roles by 2010, and acknowledged in 2016 that he had encountered a roadblock when trying to make a project. The evidence points to a serious but uneven backlash followed by a gradual return.
What does “blacklisted” mean in this case?
The word can describe either a formal, coordinated ban or a looser pattern of people declining to work with someone and projects meeting resistance. The available reporting supports the second meaning more strongly. It records public calls to shun Gibson and later accounts of ostracism and project obstacles, but does not document an industry-wide rule or a systematic record of hiring decisions.
That distinction matters: a person can face substantial professional exclusion without every studio, producer, or colleague acting together. The evidence also does not quantify how many roles or projects Gibson lost.
How Hollywood responded after the 2006 controversy
After Gibson’s Malibu DUI arrest and anti-Semitic remarks in 2006, he apologized. The reaction was divided rather than uniform. Publicist Michael Levine said at the time, “I think that this incident was a career-ender”—a prediction, not an account of what ultimately happened. Ari Emanuel, through a spokesman, supported “shunning Mel Gibson and refusing to work with him, even if it means a sacrifice to their bottom line.” Other industry figures criticized a boycott, and Disney had not announced a change to its distribution plans for Apocalypto. CBS/AP’s 2006 account and The Washington Post’s reporting show both the calls for consequences and the disagreement over how to respond.

Did Gibson stop working?
By 2010, he was back in starring roles
In 2010, CBS/AP described Edge of Darkness as Gibson’s return to starring roles after a seven-and-a-half-year gap. The report said he had completed filming The Beaver and planned another starring project. Gibson told the Associated Press that he could work with studios or independently. These milestones rule out a total, uninterrupted work ban, but they do not show that the earlier backlash had no effect. CBS/AP’s 2010 report provides the dated career marker.
In 2016, Gibson described a roadblock
By the time he was promoting and screening Hacksaw Ridge, the Los Angeles Times reported that Gibson had been largely ostracized from the filmmaking community after the 2006 incident. Asked about screenwriter Shane Black’s claim that Gibson had been effectively blacklisted for a decade, Gibson replied: “You mean, Shane Black-listed? Yeah, I guess. He tried to make something with me and encountered a roadblock. It’s been an interesting decade.” This is Gibson’s own characterization of his experience, not independent proof of a formal ban. The same report noted that some Academy members still wanted nothing to do with him, while he had other work underway or in development. The Los Angeles Times’ 2016 account captures both the resistance and the continuing activity.

Later work indicates the exclusion was not permanent
A 2025 El País retrospective describes film appearances and productions after Hacksaw Ridge. It supports the conclusion that Gibson’s return continued, though it is not a comprehensive record of every employment decision or of projects announced after the article’s publication. The retrospective provides that later career context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the evidence can—and cannot—show
- It can show: some prominent figures publicly advocated shunning Gibson; reporting later described ostracism; and Gibson said an effort to make a project encountered a roadblock.
- It can also show: responses differed, and Gibson continued to secure work, returning to starring roles by 2010 and pursuing directing and other projects by 2016.
- It cannot establish: a coordinated Hollywood-wide policy, the full number of jobs or projects affected, or a precise measure of how much the backlash altered his career.
Producer Bill Mechanic, speaking in 2016 about Gibson, argued, “It’s time to get over it. He didn’t commit a crime. He did something that is not condone-able. He did it 10 years ago. He was drunk. He’s 10 years sober. Let’s turn the page.” That is Mechanic’s view, not an independent finding about the controversy or Gibson’s sobriety.
