The report places it after The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum in the planned film sequence, but does not establish that it is a direct story sequel or give it a release date.
What is the new Lord of the Rings movie?
The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past is the later-announced Middle-earth film. The March 2026 announcement names Stephen Colbert, Peter McGee, and Philippa Boyens as its writers and says it is planned to follow The Hunt for Gollum.

That sequence does not, by itself, establish a direct narrative connection. The available announcement report does not provide a full story synopsis, cast list, or production details for Shadow of the Past.
How does it relate to The Hunt for Gollum?
The two projects were announced at different times and have distinct publicly identified creative roles. Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema announced two new Middle-earth films in May 2024, naming The Hunt for Gollum as the first. The studio announced Shadow of the Past later, in March 2026.

|---|---|---|---|
| The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum | First of two films announced in May 2024. | Andy Serkis is set to direct and star. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens were announced as producers for the new films. | Warner Bros. Discovery’s August 6, 2026 shareholder letter lists it on the planned film slate, but that is not a guarantee of a final release date. |
| The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past | Announced in March 2026; reported as planned to follow The Hunt for Gollum. | Stephen Colbert, Peter McGee, and Philippa Boyens are writing. | A release date, full cast and crew, and detailed synopsis are not established in the available announcement report. |
The role distinction matters: Serkis’s director-and-star role belongs to The Hunt for Gollum; the announced writing team for Shadow of the Past is Colbert, McGee, and Boyens. The announcement does not establish that Colbert is directing or starring.
Is Stephen Colbert making a Lord of the Rings movie?
Colbert is one of the announced writers of Shadow of the Past, alongside Peter McGee and Philippa Boyens. The reported information identifies him as a writer; it does not confirm additional roles for him on the film.
When will Shadow of the Past come out?
No release date for Shadow of the Past is established in the available report. Nor does the phrase “planned to follow” The Hunt for Gollum supply a date or a confirmed production timetable.
For context, Warner Bros. Discovery’s August 6, 2026 shareholder letter still included The Hunt for Gollum on its planned film slate. A slate reference is not a guarantee of a final release date, and it does not establish a schedule for Shadow of the Past.

Where do the books fit?
Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings books are the direct source-material option for readers seeking context around Middle-earth. That is a reading recommendation, not a verified film tie-in: no specific product connected to Shadow of the Past has been established. Middle-earth Enterprises says it holds exclusive worldwide motion-picture, merchandising, stage, and other rights for certain Tolkien works, including The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
