The Brothers of Destruction were not a permanent partnership: Kane and The Undertaker moved between bitter on-screen family rivals and a formidable tag team. Their story began with Kane’s 1997 debut as The Undertaker’s half-brother, and its defining pattern was reunion after reunion interrupted by renewed conflict.
How Kane’s debut began a family feud
On October 5, 1997, Kane entered WWE’s story at Badd Blood during the first Hell in a Cell match. WWE’s account says he tore open the cell door and attacked The Undertaker. The company presented Kane as The Undertaker’s younger half-brother—a scripted relationship between the characters, not a claim that performers Kane and The Undertaker are brothers in real life. WWE’s history of the Brothers of Destruction traces the team’s identity to that volatile connection.
From rivals to a tag-team title opportunity
WrestleMania XIV and Unforgiven, 1998
The alliance grew out of a feud. At WrestleMania XIV, The Undertaker defeated Kane; at Unforgiven, The Undertaker won WWE’s first Inferno Match. These early confrontations established that the brothers’ on-screen bond could lead to conflict as readily as cooperation. WWE’s chronology presents both matches as central moments in their history.
Royal Rumble and No Way Out, 2001
By 2001, they were teaming. Kane and The Undertaker joined forces during the Royal Rumble, then received their first tag-team championship opportunity at No Way Out. They faced reigning champions The Dudley Boyz and fellow challengers Edge & Christian in a three-team match. The title opportunity marked their early arrival in WWE’s tag division, but it did not turn them into continuous partners.

The late-career return against D-Generation X
In October 2018, WWE promoted Kane and The Undertaker for a match against Triple H and Shawn Michaels at Crown Jewel. The match took place in November; WWE’s results coverage called it the first tag-team match between those teams and reported a victory for D-Generation X. The comeback brought the Brothers of Destruction back as a pair, but it did not change the larger pattern of their story: partnership was one phase in an on-screen relationship defined by repeated reversals.
WWE summed up the team as wrestlers who had been “fierce rivals and opponents” as well as partners, calling them “one of the strongest tandems ever seen in the squared circle.” That is WWE’s characterization of its own team, rather than an independently established ranking.
