“Paul Heyman Guy” has no single official boundary: WWE uses the phrase for both prominent manager-client pairings and wrestlers whose presentation or career Heyman helped shape. This editorial ranking weighs the prominence of the relationship, Heyman’s role, the wrestler’s achievements during the relevant period, and the eras and promotions represented. It is a reasoned selection, not a ranking WWE has published.
Who are the Paul Heyman Guys?
WWE says CM Punk popularized the phrase “Paul Heyman Guy.” Its retrospective applies it broadly—to clients Heyman managed, performers he advocated for, and wrestlers whose characters or presentation he helped develop. That breadth matters: a long-running advocate-client pairing is not the same kind of relationship as Heyman producing an interview or promoting a performer in ECW.
The ten below are ranked editorially, not as an official WWE list. The order considers how prominent the association was, what Heyman did, the wrestler’s accomplishments in that period, and how well each choice represents a distinct era or promotion. WWE’s 2014 manager-client ranking placed Heyman and Lesnar first among its combinations and called the pairing career-defining, which supports Lesnar at the top.
Who was Paul Heyman’s best client? The top 10, ranked
-
Brock Lesnar
Lesnar is the clearest choice for the top spot because the relationship combined a distinctive on-screen role with substantial behind-the-scenes involvement and a documented run of major achievements. WWE says Heyman was Lesnar’s on-air agent and behind-the-scenes producer when Lesnar debuted in 2002. Heyman described that dual role in WWE’s retrospective: “When Brock debuted in WWE in 2002, I was both his on-air ‘agent’ (I just can’t bring myself to use the old school term ‘manager’) and his behind-the-scenes producer.” WWE’s career profile credits Lesnar with winning King of the Ring and defeating The Rock for the WWE Championship while Heyman guided his career. Its 2014 ranking called the duo inseparable and placed them first among manager-client combinations.

-
Roman Reigns
Heyman’s alliance with Reigns represents a different kind of partnership from his advocate role with Lesnar. WWE’s current profile calls him the “Wiseman to Roman Reigns” and includes the alliance among Heyman’s career highlights. Its place here reflects the prominence of the modern WWE partnership, not a claim that Heyman alone accounts for Reigns’ success.
-
CM Punk
Punk belongs near the top because he made “Paul Heyman Guy” a familiar phrase. WWE’s retrospective says Punk popularized it and credits him with a 434-consecutive-day WWE Championship reign, as described by WWE circa 2012. Heyman characterized his role as personal support and advocacy: “I’m here as a friend, a support staff, a lobbyist for CM Punk to receive the respect that he has earned and deserves.” The quotation captures a relationship distinct from Lesnar’s longer association, but central to the phrase itself.

-
Big Show
Heyman’s turn on Lesnar helped Big Show defeat him for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series 2002. WWE’s account calls Show the first man to defeat Lesnar at that point and frames the alliance as a career reinvention. The “first” describes the milestone in that 2002 account; it should not be read as a statement about Lesnar’s full career.
-
Steve Austin
Heyman managed Austin in WCW’s Dangerous Alliance in 1991–92 and later gave him a platform in ECW. Heyman’s own retrospective credits himself with providing an opportunity while acknowledging that Austin was destined to become a major star. That distinction makes Austin a strong example of timely advocacy and presentation, rather than a success Heyman can claim to have created by himself.

Rob Van Dam
Van Dam shows why the category extends beyond WWE title contenders. WWE’s retrospective includes him among Heyman’s “Guys” and describes Heyman’s ECW approach as letting Van Dam’s distinctive persona come through. The relationship is notable for Heyman’s role as promoter and producer, helping present a performer on his own terms.
-
Tazz
Heyman saw Tazz as an ECW main-event attraction despite the era’s preference for larger wrestlers. WWE’s retrospective points to the strong response to Tazz’s 2000 Royal Rumble debut as evidence of the persona’s impact. The case for Tazz is about Heyman’s willingness to present a performer outside conventional expectations, not a claim that he single-handedly created Tazz’s appeal.

Mick Foley
Foley represents Heyman’s influence as a producer and editor more than as a conventional manager. WWE describes Heyman directing and presenting Foley’s anti-hardcore Cactus Jack interviews in ECW, while emphasizing Foley’s own creative contribution. That shared authorship is precisely what makes the partnership distinctive.
-
Rey Mysterio
WWE says Heyman brought Mysterio to ECW in 1995, where audiences embraced his style and the promotion showcased cruiserweight wrestling. Mysterio’s place on the list recognizes Heyman’s role in giving U.S. audiences exposure to a different kind of performer within ECW’s broader presentation.

The Miz
The Miz is the developmental and character-shaping pick. WWE’s account says Heyman moved him from developmental in Atlanta to OVW in Louisville while producing its television show, and encouraged him to lean into his personality. This is a less prominent manager-client pairing than the names above, but it illustrates another way Heyman could influence a performer’s presentation.
Was CM Punk a Paul Heyman Guy?
Yes. WWE’s retrospective explicitly includes Punk and says he popularized the phrase. The label does not require a relationship identical to Heyman’s long association with Lesnar: WWE’s account presents Heyman as Punk’s friend, support staff and lobbyist for recognition. Punk’s significance is both the partnership and the phrase’s connection to him.
Who else could make the list?
This ranking is not the only defensible top ten. WWE’s retrospective also includes Rick Rude, while its current profile names Kurt Angle and Seth Rollins among Heyman’s associations. Angle is a particularly credible alternative; Rude represents Heyman’s work with the Dangerous Alliance. Their omission is a judgment about which ten relationships best balance prominence, Heyman’s specific contribution, career achievements in the relevant period, and breadth across WCW, ECW and WWE—not a claim that they were unimportant.
