John Cena’s March 1, 2025 heel turn at Elimination Chamber drew a mix of shock, jokes, approval and disapproval from WWE figures. R-Truth, Kofi Kingston, Bronson Reed, Rhea Ripley and others posted immediate reactions; Nikki and Brie Bella later praised the turn, while commentator Wade Barrett said he and Michael Cole had not been told it was coming.
What happened at Elimination Chamber
At Elimination Chamber on March 1, 2025, Cena won the men’s Elimination Chamber match to earn a WrestleMania 41 title match against Cody Rhodes. Afterward, Cena turned on Rhodes and aligned with The Rock; Travis Scott was also involved in the immediate aftermath. The storyline turn set up the road to WrestleMania 41. CBS Sports covered the turn and Cena’s later explanation.

Why Nikki and Brie Bella welcomed the turn
In an interview with TK Trinidad of Women Wrestling Talk, transcribed by Fightful on March 8, 2025, Brie Bella praised both the timing and execution: “It’s about time. I’m actually really happy because this is his farewell year, and I didn’t know if he’d give in or not. So, I love it and the way it was done. I mean, chef’s kiss.”
Nikki Bella said the turn gave fans a character they had wanted to see during Cena’s farewell tour: “It was done so well. To end your farewell tour and turn into a character that the fans have wanted for so long. It’s not only, I think, going to be fun for him, but how great for the fans. It’s like a gift he’s giving. You know what I mean? I think it’s so cool. It was amazing, too.” Fightful published both remarks.

Did the commentators know Cena would turn heel?
Wade Barrett later said the commentary team had not been briefed. In an interview with The Sportster, transcribed by WrestleTalk on February 24, 2026, Barrett recalled: “I would say that was kind of an out of body experience. To give you a little behind the scenes, they didn’t clue us in on this.”
He added: “I did not know that what you saw happening on TV was going to happen, nor did Michael Cole.” Barrett described their broadcast response as “our legit reaction” and said the moment came “by surprise, no prep.” That is Barrett’s account of what he and Cole knew before the segment, rather than an independently established account of every person involved in producing it. WrestleTalk transcribed his comments.

How Cena explained his change in character
On the March 17, 2025 episode of Raw, Cena framed the turn as a response to how he felt fans had treated and used him. In the promo, he said, “For 25 years, I’ve been a victim of an abusive relationship,” and rejected the usual character labels: “I am not a babyface. I am not a heel. I am a human being.” Those lines are Cena’s storyline framing, not independent evidence about fan behavior. CBS Sports reported on the promo.
