He described Negan and Maggie as having reached an understanding—not friendship, forgiveness, or an alliance. That was Morgan’s interpretation of the final scene; AMC later continued their story in The Walking Dead: Dead City.
Where does Negan go at the end of The Walking Dead?
The finale does not show Negan arriving at a new destination. In a post-finale interview published November 21, 2022, Morgan said Negan was “going off to start a family and kind of start over.” He explained that Negan was leaving with his wife after nodding goodbye to Daryl. This is Morgan’s account of what Negan intends, rather than an on-screen destination stated in the episode. Morgan’s interview with Entertainment Weekly, republished by Yahoo Entertainment.
Does Negan stay with Maggie?
No. Morgan said, “He’s not sticking around.” Maggie’s invitation to remain in the community does not turn into a shared future: Negan leaves after their exchange.
The scene is not a reconciliation. Maggie acknowledges Negan’s place in the community but cannot promise to forgive him for what he did, or for the grief she continues to carry. Morgan described their endpoint this way: “They’re not allies. They never will be allies. They’re not going to be friends. But I think there is an understanding.” His distinction matters: the scene allows for a degree of acceptance without erasing the harm or making the two characters friends.

Why does Negan leave after that conversation?
Morgan said the scene mattered because Negan listened rather than deflecting with a joke. He saw that restraint as the result of lessons Negan had accumulated, explaining, “Negan needed to shut up.” That is Morgan’s reading of the character and his performance, not a promise that Maggie has forgiven him.
The finale gives the original series a goodbye for Negan while leaving the characters’ lives open beyond it. Showrunner Angela Kang said the creative aim was to close a chapter and leave room for what came next. She described the handoff this way: “Let’s tell our story now and then the spin-offs will essentially take the handoff and go where they go.” Kang’s AMC interview, published November 23, 2022.

Does Negan return in The Walking Dead: Dead City?
Yes. AMC announced Dead City as a continuation centered on Maggie and Negan in post-apocalyptic Manhattan, isolated from the mainland. AMC’s January 10, 2023 announcement said the series was planned to premiere in June 2023. AMC’s announcement.
The spin-off does not undo Negan’s departure in the original finale. It resumes the pair’s story later, in a different setting and under new pressure. In an AMC interview published June 16, 2023, Morgan called Dead City a continuation and said the story begins a couple of years later. He also said Negan had reverted in important ways toward the survival instincts seen when the character was introduced. Morgan’s interview with AMC.

What AMC had announced about the continuation
AMC announced a third season of Dead City on July 16, 2025, naming Seth Hoffman as showrunner. Its stated premise has Maggie and Negan trying to set aside their differences and build a community in Manhattan. This is the latest dated continuation update established here; it does not establish the series’ present availability or any later-season status. AMC’s Season 3 announcement.
