Their 2006 announcement named the network “The CW” and identified the partners, but did not explicitly define the initials as an acronym.
What does “CW” mean?
In the network’s name, “CW” refers to the initials of CBS and Warner Bros. Entertainment, its founding partners. This is the widely understood explanation based on those companies and their role in creating the network—not a definition stated word for word in the original announcement.
That distinction matters: the announcement establishes the name, the partners and their ownership arrangement, while the explanation of the initials is inferred from those facts. The January 24, 2006 formation announcement does not say, “CW stands for CBS and Warner.”
How the network was formed
CBS Corporation and Warner Bros. Entertainment announced on January 24, 2006 that they would form The CW as a new broadcast network. At formation, each company held a 50% interest. The launch was planned for fall 2006, and the announcement said that the programming operations of The WB and UPN would cease in September of that year.

The CW’s About page describes it as a U.S. broadcast network launched in 2006. It says the network’s original programming focus was younger viewers, a demographic that advertisers sought to reach.
Who owns The CW now?
The founding ownership arrangement is not the current one. In an April 29, 2026 announcement, The CW said Nexstar Media Group owned 81% of the network. The release also described the CW app as free and fully ad-supported, and said a CW-branded hub on The Roku Channel was planned for fall 2026. How The CW’s distribution has expanded
The CW remains a broadcast network, while its programming also reaches viewers through streaming services. Its July 28, 2026 announcement said more than 800 annual hours of CW Sports programming would air on the network and stream through ESPN’s app for viewers with an ESPN Unlimited subscription, starting August 4, 2026. The release described streaming as a supplement to broadcast and pay-TV distribution. The subscription requirement applies to CW Sports on ESPN’s app; it should not be read as a requirement to watch all CW programming. See the CW Sports announcement.
