What happened in the Scott Steiner and DDP backstage fight? Retrospective accounts place the confrontation after Scott Steiner delivered a personal promo about Diamond Dallas Page and his wife, Kimberly, on WCW Monday Nitro on December 18, 2000. Page and Steiner later recalled Steiner taking Page down and reaching toward his eye; people intervened. The often-repeated locker-room rumor said to have fueled tensions is disputed: Kimberly Page denied finding the item at its center or reporting Tammy Sytch to management.
What happened in the Scott Steiner and DDP backstage fight?
A retrospective report places the incident at Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia, after Steiner’s personal promo on the December 18, 2000 episode of WCW Monday Nitro. According to the report, Page confronted Steiner in a backstage tunnel. Page later recalled that Steiner drove him down and that, as people intervened, he realized Steiner was trying to take his eye out. Steiner also later described double-legging Page and nearly ripping his eye out before others restrained him. These are participants’ retrospective recollections, not details established by a contemporaneous official incident report. Pro Wrestling Stories’ account reproduces their comments from a Hannibal TV interview.
Former WCW wrestlers Buff Bagwell and Lash Leroux also later described Steiner reaching for Page’s eye, as recounted in the same report. Those, too, are retrospective witness accounts rather than independent contemporary documentation.
Why did Scott Steiner and DDP fight?
The locker-room rumor is disputed
A reported backstory connects the tension to an item found in the women’s locker room and a rumor involving Kimberly Page and Tammy Sytch. But Kimberly denied that she found the item or reported Sytch to management. The rumor should therefore not be presented as fact or as something Kimberly initiated. The available accounts do not establish a definitive origin for the conflict. The retrospective report includes both the rumor and Kimberly’s denial.

Page pointed to Steiner’s comments
Page later said Steiner had made comments in an interview that pushed him over the edge. The report quotes Page recalling: “Scotty said some things in that interview that put me over the top.” That explanation is Page’s recollection of his own reaction, not independent proof of every detail behind the dispute.
Did Scott Steiner try to take DDP’s eye out?
Both men later described Steiner reaching toward Page’s eye during the altercation. Page said he realized that was what Steiner was trying to do; Steiner said, “I almost was going to rip his eye out… but they grabbed that too.” The wording comes from retrospective interviews reproduced by Pro Wrestling Stories, so the careful answer is that both men described it that way—not that an official record independently confirms the precise action or intent. The retrospective account says people broke up the confrontation and that Page and Steiner later sat down with Eric Bischoff to talk through the conflict. Page subsequently said he held no resentment toward Steiner. In a 2018 interview transcript, he characterized their relationship as a brotherhood and said, “Brothers sometimes fight with eachother.” Global Geek’s 2018 interview transcript records the remark.

No. The fight was a backstage incident reported after the December 18, 2000 Nitro promo. Page and Steiner later met in the main event of WCW Greed in 2001, a separate televised match in their wrestling storyline. The match is relevant follow-up, but it was not the altercation itself. Cagematch’s WCW Greed event listing identifies the event and its matches.
