In Lex Fridman Podcast #456, published January 5, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed Russia’s full-scale invasion, possible peace talks, and what he says Ukraine needs to prevent another attack. His central argument was that negotiations must include Ukraine and produce credible security guarantees—not assurances without an effective way to deter renewed aggression.

What did Zelenskyy say on the Lex Fridman podcast?

The interview ranges from language and World War II to the invasion, negotiations, NATO, Donald Trump, martial law, elections, corruption, Elon Musk, and Ukraine’s future. Those subjects follow the episode page’s outline and timestamps; they are not a neutral classification of the discussion. The political thread running through the conversation is whether a settlement can bring peace without leaving Ukraine vulnerable to further aggression.

Zelenskyy’s position, as stated in the interview, is direct: “Ukraine needs security guarantees.” He argues that a ceasefire or agreement must be backed by commitments capable of preventing renewed Russian aggression. The transcript records his views; it does not independently verify every historical, legal, or statistical assertion made by either speaker.

What did Zelenskyy say about peace talks with Putin?

Fridman proposed a meeting involving Zelenskyy, Trump, and Putin to discuss a ceasefire and security guarantees. Zelenskyy said he would first reach agreement with Trump, wanted Europe to have a voice, and would then speak with Russia. He also rejected the implication that Ukraine was the party unwilling to talk.

Fridman replied: “I have never talked to Vladimir Putin, but I have a feeling that he is ready, because Donald Trump is ready.” Fridman explicitly described this as a feeling, not information from direct contact with Putin.

What security guarantees does Ukraine want?

Zelenskyy’s concern is whether a guarantee would deter another attack and what would happen if one occurred. In discussing the Budapest Memorandum, he uses it to explain his distrust of assurances that do not prevent further aggression. The interview transcript documents his argument, but does not establish the memorandum’s legal terms or history independently.

A useful way to understand the proposals discussed is to ask:

  • Who provides the guarantee? NATO, individual countries, or a coalition could offer different forms of commitment.
  • What does it require? A promise to consult is not the same as a commitment to provide military support or collective defense.
  • How is it enforced? The practical test is what the guarantors would do if Ukraine were attacked again.
  • Who has a voice in negotiations? Zelenskyy calls for Ukraine to participate directly and for Europe to be included alongside the United States and Russia.
  • Does it deter renewed aggression? That is the outcome Zelenskyy says a guarantee must achieve.

This is an explanatory framework, not a ranking or a list of terms agreed by the interview participants.

Did Zelenskyy agree to meet Trump and Putin?

He described a sequence rather than agreeing to the three-way meeting as Fridman proposed it: first an agreement with Trump, with Europe included in the discussion, and then talks with Russia. The distinction matters. Zelenskyy did not simply endorse a meeting that would put Ukraine in a negotiation shaped by others; he emphasized Ukraine’s role and the need for meaningful guarantees.

Was the Lex Fridman interview in Ukrainian or Russian?

The conversation is not accurately described as being conducted in only one language. At the start, Fridman says he cannot understand Ukrainian and that translation delays affect the flow; Zelenskyy argues that the subject and the ability to communicate matter more than choosing Russian. The episode page offers an original mixed-language version as well as dubbed audio and captions.

The episode page says the YouTube video is available in English, Ukrainian, and Russian. Its default audio is an English overdub; selecting the English (UK) audio track plays the original mixed-language version. Captions and voice-over tracks are also listed in English, Ukrainian, and Russian.
