What does Serena Williams sing in the video?
Williams performs “I Touch Myself,” the 1990 hit by Australian band the Divinyls. She shared the awareness video in late September 2018 as part of the I Touch Myself Project. Contemporary reports covered the video in The Guardian and ABC News Australia.
Why did Serena Williams record it?
Williams said she wanted to remind women to check their breast health. In a social-media post reproduced by The Guardian, she wrote: “This Breast Cancer Awareness Month I’ve recorded a version of The Divinyls global hit ‘I Touch Myself’ to remind women to self-check regularly.”
She also described the subject as one affecting women “of all colours, all around the world,” adding: “Early detection is key – it saves so many lives. I just hope this helps to remind women of that.” These are Williams’s campaign statements, not individualized medical advice or a substitute for current guidance from a health professional.

What is the I Touch Myself Project?
The project says it launched in 2014, after Amphlett’s death, to carry forward her wish for “I Touch Myself” to be adapted as an anthem for breast health. Amphlett was the Divinyls’ lead singer and died in 2013, according to ABC News Australia. The project is associated with Breast Cancer Network Australia, as reported by ABC.
The song’s familiar title gives the campaign a direct link to checking one’s body, while Williams’s appearance brought a high-profile performer to its 2018 effort. The project’s account of Amphlett’s intention and launch is on its official website.

What impact did the campaign report?
In a 2018 retrospective, the I Touch Myself Project reported that the campaign reached over 1.25 billion people across 95 countries and that conversation about self-detection increased by 252%. Those are figures reported by the project, not independently validated measures of health outcomes. They describe claimed reach and discussion; they do not show how many people changed their behavior or whether the campaign affected diagnoses or survival.
The project homepage also states that “1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer,” but it does not give a date, geographic scope, or underlying dataset for that figure. It should not be treated as a current, universal estimate.

What the video does—and does not—establish
The video documents an awareness campaign: Williams used a performance of a well-known song to prompt attention to breast health and honor Amphlett’s stated wish. It is not, on its own, evidence for a particular screening schedule or self-check technique. Readers seeking clinical recommendations should use current guidance from an appropriate health authority or clinician rather than infer instructions from the campaign message.
