What happened to Vladimir Shklyarov?
The Mariinsky Theatre announced Shklyarov’s death on 16 November 2024. In a statement quoted by Sky News, the theatre called him “a beloved artist and audience favourite” and said he “died tragically on 16 November.” The statement also said his loss was deeply felt by the Mariinsky and the wider ballet world.
The Guardian reported that a Mariinsky spokesperson told Russian media Shklyarov died after falling from a building’s fifth floor. CBS News, carrying an AFP report, and Sky News published similar attributed accounts. Some coverage described a fifth-floor balcony. These are contemporaneous reports of the circumstances, not a final determination of how the fall occurred.
What was reported about the investigation?
Sky News reported that RIA Novosti said an investigation had been launched and that an accident was considered the preliminary cause. The Guardian likewise described the accident assessment as preliminary. The reports cited here do not establish a final investigative conclusion.

The Guardian also relayed a dancer’s account that Shklyarov went onto a narrow balcony and lost his balance. That is a colleague’s reported account, not an independently established investigative finding. The Guardian reported that Shklyarov had been taking painkillers for a back injury and was scheduled for spinal surgery; those details do not establish a medical cause of death.
Who was Vladimir Shklyarov?
Born in St Petersburg in 1985, Shklyarov joined the Mariinsky Theatre in 2003 and became a principal dancer in 2011, according to The Guardian. Principal is the highest-ranking position in a ballet company.
